The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Kenneth Henry Root. Root was born on a farm in Kansas in 1926 and moved with the family to Fort Worth, Texas in 1938 as a result of the Great Depression. Description

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Kenneth Henry Root. Root was born on a farm in Kansas in 1926 and moved with the family to Fort Worth, Texas in 1938 as a result of the Great Depression. He lied bout his age and entered military service in Houston in 1942 when he was 15 years old. He joined the Navy and trained at San Diego. He trained as a Hospital Corpsman and was assigned to the newly formed Third Marine Division stationed in North Carolina. Eventually, he shipped out with the Third to New Zealand for more training. Root tells anecdotes about being aboard ship and training and being on Guadalcanal. He was in his forst action on Bougainville and describes assisting a wounded Marine. He has more anecdotes about being aboard ship on the way to Guam and stories about participating in the invasion. After Guam, he was sent to Opalaca Naval Air Station where he was on an emergency crash response team and spent the remainder of the war. He describes two crashes he witnessed. Root was discharged in December 1945.
