No, Jim, the trouble with the
farmer today is not so much the lack
of a market for his products, as you
claim, but his trouble lies in his in-
ability to find some one to whom he
is not already indebted to buy his
scuff. For example, Jim, let's con-
sider the case of our mutual friend,
Jones. "Jones pays the freight" is
equivalent to saying that Jones is the
innocent bystander in it street brawl,
he corespondent in a divorce suit or
the cat's paw in a chestnut raking
contest. In other words, Jones is al-
ways the fellow that gets shot, no
matter who the gun is aimed at.
It is a matter of common knowl-
edge that Jones owes nearly every
merchant in town. but heing human
like many of us, he needs a little
ready cash to provide for the needs
of his family, so when he takes his
wife mid children to town along with
a little jug of produce, it stands to
reason that he must find some one to
whom is not indebted to buy the
stuff. Right here is where the rub

HOUSEHOLD HINTS
Half the fun of arranging a happy
Christmas for the folks is to set a
very tempting and inviting festive
table. Knowing what pieuses their
palates best, it is not very much of
a task in perfecting an appealing
menu. Allow me to suggest one I'm
sure they'll like. Here it is:
Christmas Dinner Menu
Fruit cups.
Roast turkey with dressing.
Cranberry sauce.
Mashed potatoes.
Peas or creamed 01:1011s.
Perfection salad.
Pickles, nuts and celery.
Bread, butter, jelly and coffee.
Mince pie and cheese.
How to Prepare Turkey
Wash and clean turkey well. Fill
both pockets with favorite dressing.
Hew up with stout white string. Tie
legs together. Season with salt and
pepper. Place in roasting pan. Spread
a little bacon grease over top. Put
in hot oven without water until a
nice brown. Then pour little water
in pan. Cover —baste frequently. Be
sure ami cook turkey a long while.
In ’hr choir
any other honest farmer can afford
to turn in a load of produce on an
old account when. there is any possi-
bility of sidling it for cash and
spending the proceeds for the needs
of his fanly: such as an overcoat
and bat for himself, a handkerchief
and pipe for his wife, a plug of
chewing tobacco for his baby, to say
nothing of a pair, of boots and a set
of chain harness for the grown
daughter who has just finished col-
lege and wants to make a crop with
dad another year.
Yes. I will admit. Jim. that Jones
might pay part of his account and
get the merchant to let him have a
little cash, but that plan, plausible
as it may sound, has one glaring
wakneks: It don't always work. The
fact i«, Jim. I happn to know that
Jones tried this plen not long ago.

and here is how it workd out.
Jones happened to get hold of r
little cash and went to two of hi
creditors and proposed to pay par
of his account and asked that they
give him back some change out o
the bills proffered in payment. This
both- creditors did, after much hag
gling and giving Jones to understand
Hint they were giving him back his
change at way below cost and were
losing money on the deal. One mar
not only-claimed he was losing mon
ey on the deal, but put up the old
gag that he had to live.
Of course Jones had him bested
there as the merchant just had te
live whether or no, but Jones could
live or die just as he chose. But you
know how is is about this dying bus-
l iness, Jim. When a fellow like Jones
has hung around on this mundane
sphere, like a wart on the face of
nature, for almost a hif century, he
kinder gets used to the idea of living
and don’t take very kindly to the
idet of making such a radical change
in his mode of existence on such
short notice. Yes, Jones got his
change, but the ordeal left him with
a feeling that the advantages gained .
were hardly worth the price ami that
farming just now is u great life if
one don't weaken.
Wait a minutes, wait a minute,
now. Jim! You know doggone well
