PLAQUE GOES TO “COUPLE OF THE YEAR” - Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Byers, owners of La Floresta RV Park north of Mercedes, display the
plaque they were given at Saturday’s banquet for having earned
honors as “Couple of the Year.”
IN THE SERVING LINE at Saturday’s Chamber Banquet were the
C-C supporters above and some 120 others. Guests were treated to
boiled shrimp, cole slaw and potato salad, while the meeting featured
a talk by humorist/philosopher W.C. Newberry.

give-away. Other highlights of the affair included
special recognition for a number of citizens and
HONORED FOR MEMBERSHIP SOLICITATION - Mrs. Lois Dupree
was recognized at Saturday’s banquet for having obtained the highest
number of Chamber memberships during the past year. She is
presented a certificate for her efforts, which netted 12 memberships,
from retiring President Chip Sparrow, who was also presented a
plaque for service as president during the past year.

Highlights of Saturday night’s
annual banquet of the Mercedes
Chamber of Commerce ranged from
installation of new directors to the
giveaway of $10,000, but also noted
was a list of some 20 Chamber
members with 35 years or more of
service to the organization.
Those presented service awards
included Borderland Hardware,
Burr’s Feed ,and Seed, Bill Bunton
Auto Supply, Central Chevrolet and
Central Power and Light.
Also recognized were the City of
Mercedes, First National Bank of
Mercedes, Hidalgo County Bank,
Garcia and Trevino Funeral Home
and Mercedes Super Drug.
Others named included the
Mercedes Hotel, the Mercedes
Enterprise, Wendell Schwarz, Mar-
vin Schwarz Produce and Ten-Ten
Grocery.
Certificates also went to H&H
Foods, Queen City Laundry, HEB
Grocery, Heggen Electric and
McAfee Insurance Agency.
