Tabled at Tuesday’s meeting was
action on a contract to privatize the
city’s garbage pick-up. The meeting
nevertheless featured a lengthy dis-
cussion involving officials, citizens
and Eddy Gonzalez, who as owner of
Superior Disposal Systems, has made
an offer to the city for the contract.
Outside city hall during Saturday’s
special meeting, several dozen citi-
zens gathered to stage a protest march,
drawing television cameras and curi-
ous passersby. Organizers told report-
ers they were against awarding the
contract without allowing other firms
the chance to bid. (See photo, Page

City Manager Alan Kamasaki said
at press time Wednesday that he had

to Mercedes volunteers
Here's somtheing else 10 make you proud to call Mercedes home,
a letter from the La Feria city manager to Mercedes Citiy Manager
Alan Kamasaki.
I would like to express the City of La Fenia's appreciation to the
Mercedes Volunteer Fire Department. Last evening, November 16.
1992, a house fire required our fire department to ask for mutual aid
fromMercedes. Within minutes, your departmentwasonsite assisting
our firefighters in extinguishing the fire.
I personally observed the completely professional manner in
which the members of your department attacked the problem. 1
observed how, in my opinion, a fire chief is supposed to lead his people
in tough situations.
Chief Rudy Garza did an exceptional job in taking charge, placing
his resources in optimum positions and directing his firefighters to the
places they could do the most good.
The most remarkable observance was that this was all accom-
li hed ith t f wasted time and in a completely safe
manner
The La Ferdia volunteers learned a valuable lesson by observing
his actions and the response he obtained from his firefighters.
La Feria says thank you, not only for the help in putting out the fire,
but in receiving valuable fire scene training.

The year will soon end with both
the C&C Bakery and HEB Foodstore
projects closer to becoming reality.
City commission and Chamber of
Commerce members hosted a ground-
breaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon
at the C&C Bakery site, just east of
Mercedes Inn on Mile Two West.
On hand for the event was Joel
Cavazos, C&C president, withhis fam-
ily. Mr. Cavazos told those gathered
that in all his long experience in busi-
ness, he “had never seen a city work so
hard” to assist a prospective business
client.
Work is already underway at the
site, and completion is seen as early as
May.
In a special meeting Saturday morn-
ing, city commissioners approved a
contract for a lease of the property to
the C&C firm. That item had been
tabled from a meeting the previous
Tuesday to allow the officials to read
the document more closely.
One item passed last Tuesday, how-
ever, was the first reading of an ordi-
nance to abandon the alley between
Texas and Ohio Avenues, from
Hidalgo Street to Cameron. That ac-
tion is being taken to allow HEB to
build its new store.
Store officials remain tight-lipped
about plans and schedules for the
project, but Anita Lozano, an attorney
with the law firm of Jones, Galligan,
Key, said that the alley abandonment
was necessary to allow “HEB to build
across the tract.” She added that the
company has agreed to pay expenses
