Funeral services were conducted
Saturday morning for Ruben Garza,
who died December 18.
A popular 1 O-year-old fifth grader
at Taylor Elementary School, he suc-
cumbed after a battle with cancer.
Survivors include his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Luis Rene Garza; two broth-
ers, Luis Rene Garza, Jr. and Carlos
Garza; and three sisters, Maricela
Garza, Cynthia Garza and Angela
Garza.
Also surviving are his maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andres
Ayala, and the paternal grandmother,
Mrs. Oralia Garza. All are from
Mercedes.
Funeral services took place at 10
a.m. at the Mercedes Church of the
Nazarene. Burial followed at High-
land Memorial Park.
Garcia and Trevino Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
THEIR HOMES WERE WINNERS in the Christmas Home
Decorations Contest sponsored by the Mercedes Chamber of
Commerce. Grand prize went to Felipe Guzman, left, and his
family, for their home at 209 Mistletoe (S. Rio Rico Road.)
Second place winner was the home of Yolanda Briseno, right,
and her family, (last year’s grand prize winner — this year’s
decorations are different). Chamber President Mario
Dominguez presents their cash prizes. Not shown was third

Survivors include his wife of 12 ,
years, Mrs. Jeanette Harvey, and a •
son, Ryan Harvey, both of Mt. Pleas-
ant; his mother, Mrs. Lou Anna Harvey
of San Benito; his father, J. Edwin -
Harvey of Harlingen; a sister, Terry .
Harvey of Sunland, California; two
step-daughters, Sabrina Stephenson
and Shelly Stephenson; and one step- .
granddaughter.
Funeral services took place at 2
p.m. in Thomae-Garza Funeral Home •
in San Benito. Burial followed in Mont
Meta Memorial Park. Rev.Carlos
Cloyd of the First United Methodise
Church officiated.
Honorary pallbearers were mem-
bers of the San Benito Kiwanis and
Key Club.
So join us at our holiday open house, all day December 23,
at both the downtown and expressway locations.
We'll be closing at noon, December 24, remaining closed
on Christmas day, but the motor bank will be open the morning
of December 26 for your banking convenience.
While we celebrate our last Christmas in the main
bank building downtown, we look forward to
the new year and the consolidation of all our
banking services at the Expressway Motor Bank.
Edwin Kendall (Ken) Harvey,
former Mercedes resident, was buried
December 18 after his death Decem-
ber 13 in Mt. Pleasant. An apparent
murder victim, he was 41 years old.
Born in Dallas, he came with his
family to Mercedes at an early age.
The family lived here from 1953 to
1965, while his father published The
| Enterprise. The younger Harvey at-
tended elementary school here.
After the sale of The Enterprise,
the family moved to San Benito, where
the elder Harvey served the San Benito
News as managing editor for 19 years.
Ken was a graduate of San Benito
High School, where he was active in
Key Club and tennis.
He attended Sam Houston State
University before entering the restau-
rant business. He had been associated
° with Dairy Queen, Red Lobster and
the Sonic chain. He operated the Mt.

A holiday schedule has been an-
nounced at the Mercedes Joint Tax
Office by Tax Collector Ismael Luna,
Jr.
The office will be closed all day
Thursday and Friday of this week in
observance of Christmas, and all day
next Friday, January 1, for New Year’s
Day.

strong shoulders, that were provided
to us in our time of need.

Holiday changes
garbage pick-up
Garbage collection schedules have
been announced for the holiday period
by Public Works Director Albert
Zavala.
This week, with employees off both
Thursday and Friday, Thursday’s rou te
was to be covered on Wednesday,
December 23. Friday’s route will be
covered on the following Monday,
December 28.
With New Year’s Day a holiday,
that Friday route will be covered Thurs-
day, December 31, and Thursday’s
will be moved back to Wednesday,
December 30.

K-of-C sets
cemetery
clean-up
Mercedes Knights of Columbus
will host a holiday clean-up of the
Catholic Cemetery this Thursday,
December 24, reports Grand Knight
Fred Espinoza.
Others in the community are in-
vited to pitch in and help with the
work, he adds.
The group will be on the job from
9 a.m. to noon, working and providing
beverages to others who help out, he
says.
