Energy — important to our lives, but
often taken for granted.
Rarely do we think about our en-
ergy sources or where they come
from. During October, Texans are
encouraged to learn more about en-
ergy during National Energy Aware-
ness Month. This year’s theme is
“energy: plan it for the planet,”
emphasizing the need for global, as
well as national, awareness.
This year energy awareness is
especially important Events on the
other side of the world are directly
affecting each of us. Iraq’s invasion
of Kuwait and the ensuing crisis have
caused our gasoline prices to rise
dramatically over the past few
months. Again, we are reminded of
the extent of our energy dependence
on other countries. Energy aware-
ness month is designed to help
Americans remember the importance
of using energy wisely and effi-
ciently.
: Each year, government organiza-
lions sponsor events to observe en-
ergy awareness month. In addition,
businesses, schools, private organi-
zations, and civic groups statewide
are encouraged to promote energy
awareness and education to their
groups or associates through contest,
recycling programs, lectures or simi-
lar activities.
“You also can make a difference.
First, learn about energy efficiency
and renewable energy sources. Sec-
ond, put this knowledge to use by
initiating energy conservation meas-
ures in your home, car, recreational
vehicle, school, or work place. Prac-
ticing energy conservation measures
also will save you money,’ says the
Texas energy extension service.
