1 am seeing those books, but I don't think you are going
to see any books rilled with bumper sticker sayings.
There have to be more colorful sayings than those
appearing on the backs of vehicles. We can't be that dull
all the time.
Of course, some bumper stickers I like better than
others, but none, methinks, can compare with many of our
sayings from frontier days. One bumper sign that rather
pleased me: "Pass with care, driver chewing tobacco." I

as a speckled pup under a red wagon" and "Pretty as dollar
cotton." You who’ve never raised cotton and sold it for a
nickel a pound may not appreciate the compliment of the
latter.
It has always astonished me how often you people are
always quoting yourselves when you’re talking (It aston-
ishes me, too, that I do the same thing, but let’s talk about
you here.)
Big talkers who often quote themselves sometimes
have difficulty making others believe what they are
saying. It tickles me when one quotes that old saying: "If
I tell you a hen dips snuff, you can look under her wing
for the can.” That is pretty certain and is similar to saying:
“If I tell you it is Christmas, you can put up your
stocking.”
How about “If I tell you there is going to be a dance, you
can bring your fiddle?” Or, “If I tell you it is going to rain,
you can put out the catch barrel?”
And that reminds me of one old East Texan’s descrip-
tion of one rain he remembered:
“You might ’member that time it rained cats an’ dog s
for a week back in, was it ’23 or *33?" Enywey w’en I tell
you it rained, I ain’t jes’ jabberin’ about a Methodist
shower. It rained.
“I ’member we had a ole barrel layin’ out ‘side the
house with both ends out an’ th* bung hole open and
stikin’ up. Yu know whut? It rained so hard thet barrel
caute full an’ watur wuz runnin* out the bung hole.”
There are many ways to describe representatives of the
human race who are as useless as two buggies in a one-
horse town. Get the picture? You might say: “He couldn’t’
pour water out a a boot with directions written on the
heel." Try “He’s lower than a snake’s belly."
Of course this is all in old-time fun. You don’t ever
want to call anyone bigger than you what he really is.

It's Here!
Ah, Shades of Autumn! How great was the cool, almost chilly air of
Tuesday morning, a reprieve from summer's hot clinches which seemed never
ending. For so long everyone awaited a cooler atmosphere and at last it did
arrive.
In addition to cooler weather, the fall season brings in other good
things—special times like Halloween and Thanksgiving —pumpkins and
autumn blossoms—fairs and carnivals.
Once the season meant the beginning of school and the opening of the
