Tournament winner was Sharyland,
which shot a 636. “Sharyland has a
strong team all around,” the coach
says, “so they and Los Fresnos will be
the teams to beat in our district this
year. But I’m sure our players have the
experience and ability to play with the
best of them.”
Next action for the team will be a
March 5 tournament hosted by the
Raymondville Squad, followed by the
13th Annual Mercedes Knights of
Columbus Golf Tournament, March
6, at Llano Grande Golf Course in
Mercedes.
For these reasons Mrs. Morrison ■
chose him as her favorite composer of ■
the “Golden Age” of popular songs. ■
Following the program, a social
hour was enjoyed by 20 members.
Mercedes High School golfers
kicked off a new season of play re-
cently with a two-day tournament at
the Fort Brown Golf Course, hosted
by Brownsville Porter, reports Coach
David Garcia.
MHS athletes placed sixth in the
sub-5A category, shooting a 694 two-
day total, the coach reports.
The team is composed of returning
The Los Ebanos Study club met at
the home of Genevieve Bowe Febru-
ary 15, with Lucile Schwarz serving as
co-hostess.
Mrs. Bess Carter called the meet-
ing to order, with members reciting
the club collect, and pledging alle-
giance to the flags. The secretary called
the roll, and read the minutes of the
animals, lakes and glaciers in Canada.
Boarding a bright red train in
Vancouver, she and her husband trav-
eled to Kamloops, spent the night there
and reboarded the train next day going
on to Jasper National Park.
She said that Jasper National Park
is the largest park in Canada and is
known as the “Gem of the Rockies.” It
covers4200 square miles and over two
million people visit there each year.
The couple said they were impressed
with the cleanliness, the friendly people
and the beautiful rivers in Canada.
Two side trips from Jasper were
enjoyed, she added. One was to the
Columbia Ice Fields and the other to
Lake Maligne. Concluding her talk, a
video was viewed on the Ice Field
Parkway, Columbia Ice fields. Town
of Jasper and Maligne Lake.
Mrs. Polfus served refreshments to
Mrs. Virginia Bazar, Mrs. Genevieve
Bowe, Mrs. Shelton Brookshire, Mrs.
Monte Churchill, Mrs. Edgemon, Mrs.
Robert Eilers, Mrs. Goldsby Goza,
Mrs. Bill Green, Mrs. Jones, Mrs.

Mary Alice Baingo announced that

munity Concerts to be conducted in
Harlingen this spring.
Mrs. Baingo introduced program
presenter Marcia Morrison, whose
topic was “The Best of Music.”
She said that the “best” of music,
like the “best” of anything is different
for each of us, but there is a variety of
music from what is called the “Golden
Age” of American popular songs that
most might agree is the “best” of its
kind.
An American popular lyricist said,
“The popular song of the past half
century had the largest impact on
American culture of any so-called art-
form because the popular song IS
American Culture.”
In the 1880’s mass production made

the MJHS PTO, set for this Thursday,
reports Principal Mauro Vasquez, Jr.
“We’ll be setting out our goals and
objectives at this meeting,” Mr.
Vasquez says, “so it’s important that
companies’ wares to the general pub- ■
lic.

ods were so successful that music pub-
lishing became a very big business, it
was told.
In the late 1800s the most popular
songs were sentimental ballads, songs
that told a story, such as “The Pardon
Came Too Late,” or “After the Bell.”
In 1904 George M. Cohan’s show
“Little Johnny Jones.” became the first
genuine American musical with the
use of ragtime. The outstanding song
was “Give My Regards to Broadway.” ■

musical “Oklahoma;” and Irving ■
Berlin’s words and music to many ■
songs, such as “Alexander’s Ragtime ■

and Theona Evans were “the talent” in three commercials
honored last Saturday for Valley Advertising Federation ADDY
Awards. The pair were featured in spots for Bert Odgen
Dealerships, which took numerous awards for television ads,
and were produced by KGBT. Two of the awards were for
spots in the “Wildchild” campaign, with a third coming for the
“I Dream of Wildchild” ad. Segments winning ADDY honors
will advance to compete against ads from across the state in
district competition in Corpus Christi in April. Offering con-
