That was then. And to be straight
about it, if a stranger or a sailor or a

will commence at the first slur, vary-

at first and then who knows what.

GOD’S FIVE MINUTES
THERE IS A TIME FOR EVERYTHING' Ecclesiastes 3:1, The Living Bible, Tyndale House
any air patch’s initial entry point,
“Tower, America’s favorite fighter
squadron at the initial for the break.”
And continued attempts at instilling
radio discipline into JB fell, as any
attempts at disciplining JB on any-
thing fell, on deaf ears. As always,
those deaf ears were connected by a
slightly insane grin. More on JB later.
So that was the outfit call sign.
Individual call signs were not nearly
so time consuming or complicated.
Tradition and practice necessitated
their being and use. You usually came
up with your own. If you were in-
volved in some incident, scrape, bar
act or had a physical feature that was
unusual, you were given the appropri-
ate call sign; a fellow that had a white
streak of hair on his forehead was
always known as Spot.
While the half-baked movie Top
Gun, a few years back, gave great play to
call signs like Maverick and Ice Man,
they were for most part, a Hollywood
concoction, something for the movie
people to play with, probably to add a
touch of needed machismo. The acidic,
corrosive property of Ready Room wit
from almost any good fighter squadron’s
Ready Room would have made short
work of those trying-too-hard call
signs.
Take the case of Cheyenne; West-
ern, tough-guy sounding enough and
legitimate at that. The man’s home
town was Cheyenne, Wyoming. But
every time the lineups were put up on
the blackboard, pilots/RIOs with flight
numbers prefixed to them, it was writ-
ten “Shy Ann.” No matter that the guy
was one of the most experienced and
knowledgeable RIOs ever, was a two
tour Vietnam veteran with probably
two or three hundred combat missions
and a Top Gun graduate — nope, Shy
Ann it was. S
Find that soft spot and bore in, in the
best Ready Room way. To reveal a
raw nerve was to suffer and suffer.

Dear Mercedes,
THE CALL SIGN
112 was originally called The Wolf
Pack. It had its beginning during World
War II, I believe, and like most marine
fighter squadrons had had a pretty il-
lustrious career. There is a plaque in
the Ready Room with the names of all
the commanding officers engraved on
it, and the dates of their holding the
billet.
In the archives down the hall at
Group Headquarters is the official put the package in, spent months wait-
