In a meet which was significant only because it
matched the current NCAA indoor champions against
the defending outdoor champions, the Miners
defeated Arizona State University 69-60 Saturday at
Tempe, Ariz.
Head coach Ted Banks prefers to use dual and
triangular meets as a continuation of training for his
athletes so they reach their peak for the Western
Athletic Conference and NCAA Championships. As a
result, regular season meets rarely provide
outstanding performances.
Jerome Deal and Steve Hanna were the only Miners
to turn in quality performances Saturday as Deal
blazed to a 10.44 first-place clocking in the
100-meter dash and Hanna sailed 53-8% to win the
triple jump.
The Miners dominated the weight competition
with Hans Almstrom, Svein Walvik and James
Headley performing well. Almstrom finished first in
the shot put with a toss of 60-7% and Walvik took
