The Colony Police
Department responded to the
following calls in the past week:

Cross Timbers Girl Scout Troop 458 visited The Colony Fire Department where they baked
homemade desserts and presented to the firefighters as part of “Giving Thanks” to them for all
they do in the community. They took a tour of the fire station and learned more about what the
firefighters do, how they live at the fire
station and about fire safety.
In December, the Troop visited
children at Plano Presbyterian
Hospital. They sang Christmas
carols and gave the children coloring
books, crayons and other small
gifts to help pass the time during
their hospital stay.

Squad
deactivates
what
Krum
thought
was bomb
BY CRYSTAL FORESTER

You never know what you
will find when you are clean-
ing out a closet. A Krum resi-
dent found this out when he
found what he thought could
be nitroglycerin in a closet.
The Denton County bomb
squad was called after the con-
cerned citizen brought in what
he thought was nitroglycerin
to the Krum Police
Department.
The police department and
surrounding businesses were
evacuated Thursday night as a
safety precaution.
“Public safety is the first
thing they think about when
something like this comes up,”
said Denton County public
information officer Tom
Reedy.
As the resident was clean-
ing out his brother’s closet, he
found a bottle full of what he
thought could be nitroglycerin,
Reedy said. To be safe he took
it to the police department for
them to take care of, he said.
The police took the bottle
outside and called the Denton
County Fire Marshall’s office,
who responded and called for
the Denton County Bomb
Squad, said Assistant
Emergency Management
Coordinator Brad Simpkins.
The entire bomb squad, about
10 people with two qualified
technicians, showed up to deal
with the container, Simpkins
said.
Although the liquid turned
out to be inert material, the
bomb squad took necessary
precautions to ensure public
safety, Simpkins said.
“Anytime you expect explo-
sive material you evacuate the
area immediately,” he said.
Less than 30 people were
evacuated at 6 p.m. because
most businesses were closed
at the time, Simpkins said.
The bomb squad stacked
hay stacks around the contain-
er in an open area covered it
and blew it up, Reedy said.
The Denton County bomb
squad responds to several calls
a year, although it varies —
sometimes once a week or it
can be once a month, Simpkins
said.
“It happens a lot more than
you would think,” he said.
