A "religious riot" is aanounced as in
progress at Port Said between Greeks and
Arabs. How a religious riot is conducted is
not explained but it is not a camp meeting.
The great questions as to whether Presi-
dent Arthur was ill in Florida or not and as
to whether Secretary Chandler killed or only
frightened an alligator still agitate the
country.
WHEN a Boston parson read out the hymn
for the choir "When I can read my title clear
to mansions in the skies" some one in his
congregation cried out "You had better get
your title clear to this church first." lie
probably held the mortgage.
Lorne's wife made a speech to the people
of Ottawa a few days ago on the occasion of
her return from America meaning Boston
and strange to say did not mention Oliver

essary apology.
Tobacco in the shape of the supple cigar-
ette and the dime novel are the most potent
enemies to American boys. The Legislature
of New Jersey has interdicted the sale of
cigarettes and the dime novel has received
the attention of various State Parliaments.
Hut vice is stronger than legislation even in
boys.
The town of Lemars Illinois has an editor
who has great talents as a non-combattant.
He has been publicly whipped 15 times sine
it was discovered he would not fight about
five years ago. His paper is called the Lib'
eral and it probably is so. It is expected he
will be sent to Congress in the interest of
peace.

The oracular Talmadge is often very tire-
some and discomforting as when he says
" seated in some unpretending law office or
some gubernatorial chair or in some quiet
farm house is the man who will be the next
President of the United States." It Is per
haps fortunate for the country that he is not

A NHW IIAI.LOON DHl'AltTUKK.
The famous Captain Uoynton is said to have
a great novelty in store for the social scien-
tific and art world which is nothing more nor
less than a sheet iron balloon. This is not a
balloon for sailing among or over the clouds
or which might be applied to making geo-
graphical discoveries about aymmes Hole
and lighting possibly upon that coveted spot
of watery earth the open Arctic sea. The
Captain doe's not expect to fly hs balloon
with air nor in the air nor fly it at all but to
apply it to expeditions in the depths of the
ocean. We are so accustomed to balloons
for purposes of loose navigation or sailing on
voyages without a port of destination in the
upper air that the announcement of
one to be applied to expeditions
under water and to exploring the depths of
ocean is somewhat startling. It
seems rather strange that the famous Captain
should strike on anything that has a shade of
utility in it although wc arc not yet aware what
he designs more than to do something no one
else has done or thought of. Like the dyna-
miteists he has been ransacking the labora-
toiies of chemistry in pursuit ol new discov-
eries and has found new agencies by which
he can manufacture atmospheric air down on
the bottom of the sea for breathing purposes
so as not to have to import it from the foreign
realm above the ocean's surface. He relates
that as an experiment he went down into the
sea off the Irish coast on an expedition that
occupied him 16 hours. He declares the ex-
periment satisfactory and his discovery com-
plete but does not mention anything ol con-
ditions in that locality whether he found in
fernal machines or sub-marine batteries in
great numbers for blowing up England or not
nor anything of the geology of that watery
section nor of the state of science or of the
social arts. Hut we take it the
Captain has become tired of an im
pecunious lie wnicn 11c seems 10
have been unable to lose or throw away
and has abandoned the exclusive pursuit of
glory which has occupied him heretofore and
has fastened a covetous eye upon the treasures
that for some thousands of years have been
accumulating on the ocean bottoms. And he
has also probably the curiosity to know what
the poet Grey meant by
"I'lill many a itum of purest ray sercuo
The dark uututhomod eaves or ocean bear."
That there is an extensive field for a new
crop of millionaires if such are to be the
practical uses of the Captain's sheet-Iron bal-
loon is beyond other or further question than
that of its success. Hut our millionaires since
Peter Cooper departed this life are such a
beggarly set that we do not take greedily to
the idea of exploring old Neptune's
dominions for the means of endowing another
batch. Let us wait however and see the
Captain's drift now that he seems to have
ceased drifting on rivers and among cataracts.

Hcnsar writes saying : ' 1 The writer of the
article in your issue of the tst instant upon
James Curley is in error in many respects
and I ask your kind permission to make some
observation thereon. Let me in the first
place inform you that I am an Englishman
who has passed many yean in England who
has visited Ireland who was a member of
the Land League and who is practically con
versant with Irish affairs. Your writer evi
dently bases his article upon matter he has
read instead of personal experience hence he
falls into error. Now what is the whole affair
upon which he writes? Simply this.
An Illegal society is formed of which
Carey and others are members.
Thus in the first place they become by the
laws of the land guilty of the most important
felony the extreme punishment of which is
death. The society acting under orders
committed a dastardly outrage which shocked
the civilized world. In other words they
murdered two men who were irresponsible for
the condition of Ireland. Murder will out
innocent blood cries for vengeance. At length
this society is detected and one James Hrady
makes a partial confession. Carey then foe
lows suit and reveals the whole of the plot
Who else could prove the conspiracy and
murder but one of its members and when that
confession is supported by fact and circunv
stantial evidence of a strong character
it is good in law as it should be
The convicted mtn are condemned to death
and your writer grumbles at the proposed
speedy execution. They are sentenced as
murderers and arc dealt with as murderers in
England by being allowed three consecutive
clear Sundays between the day upon which
sentence is passed and that on which it is car
ried out. That there was a secret organiza
tion and that the murders were deliberately
planned is proved by Delaney and Ca'fferly
who in the face of death admitted that this
was the case and that they were present at
the murder and were obliged to be
there under the pain ol death. The very na
ture of the conspiracy and aim? places them
under the death penalty They knew the law
they infringed it and should take the conee
uuence. When Guiteau killed the President
he forfeited his life. If there had have been
conspirators or accessories to the act they
would have suffered in a like manner. Those
who are in favor of order must exclaim "Let
justice be done though the heavens fall1
