Yung needs time
The H in response to Sports 1 ditor Sheldon Wheeler’s
mark > in the Oct J hone of The Prospector While poin
ing out that C oach Hill Yung has been more sccrwful
has his predecessors h evidence that he is turning the foot
ball program around it takes time to turn a losing pro-
grain into a winner and time is all that Yung needs.
While the effects of Yung’s tenure cannot he seen as
aim in the win low column, one only has to look at the of
Tenive statistics. In previous years the Miner offense was
in a struggle against themelves just to score The 1985
seavon has been different in that respect and the Miners
have proven that they can move the hall with greater rare
and wore more points than in previous years
I agree with Wheeler that Yung’s offensive philosophy n
■ bil comervative at times, but he knows the team’s
rengths and weaknesses and what it can and cannot do
Wheeler suggests that the Miners should change their
urategy but doing this would defeat everything that Yung
has accomplished wo far
"It takes time to turn a losing
program into a winner and
time is all that Yung needs.”’
BACKSTAGE PUPPET SHOW
Along with taking time to turn a losing program around,
the moo important ingredient is having talented players
The Miners weakness is not the offence or Yung’s conser
vativenem, but rather a need for bigger and stronger defen
sive linemen in contrast to the offence which shows much
potential, the defence hat not been able to hold opponents
to any respectable degree The rushing defense ic average,
which would be sufficient if the pass defense would hold
up On the contrary, when an opponent has to move the
hall they merely have to pass and they'll find success. This
situation is not due to poor pact coverage but to the lack of
a pass rush Even a poor passing quarterback can be suc-
cenful if he is not pressured This It what hat been the
downfall of the Miners this year
The Miner defensive line is just not big enough to com
pete with the huge offensive linemen that are typical of all
major colleges This it not to say that they lack talent
because they would not be playing college football, but the
weight differences between the opponent’s offensive line
and the Miner defensive line eventually taker its toll. This
weakness will be overcome by Yung either through
recruiting or by bulking up his present players Again, its
just a matter of time but Yung will prove all the pessimists
wrong.

Popcorn machine
worth while expense
Guest Editorial by Able Kupfer
let me share my thoughts on the popcorn machine
recently purchased by the UT TI Paso Student Association
As an invoiced student at this University working within
the Student Association ac a volunteer who is in charge of
pep rallies, I feel the Student Association’s job is to work
for the student. The pep rallies arc so designed to raise the
expirit de corps and decrease apathy on this campus, in
reference to total school spirit and the unity among frater-
nities and student organizations.
Occasionally, incentives are needed to get students to
show up to these pep rallies to promote the "Miner
Magic " These incentives could be either competitions or
freebies. I appreciate the purchase of the popcorn machine
to assist us in the endeavor of building spirit on campus.
Rather than spending the student’s money to send one
senator to a conference, the money spent on tangible
equipment will be used for many years to come, including
the popcorn machine in addition, the popcorn will be
given out to more of the student body rather than to one
student, a senator Remember, the senators arc here to
serve the student body,
I would like to challenge the senators to stop the com-
plaining and pop the popcorn for the next pep rally on Oct.
25. lather than eat it all at the senate meetings. I was in-
formed that the senators would have agreed on a small
machine for their meetings, but I feel the larger machine
will serve the student body on a larger scale
In closing, we the student body should commend Stu-
dent Association President Dia’n Villegas for caring about
the students.

mirtee.

Try, tn again
Editor,
In response to Tim Holt’s letter in
the Oct ft issue of The Prospector, I
would like to say that taking a
defeatist attitude such as his will
never help at all. What gives him the
right to tell someone else when it is
time for them to give up? How
would he like it if one of his teachers
told him ihal he was too dumb for
college science and ought to go back
to seventh-grade science
Should a blind person give up
hope on ever seeing again? Would
he walk up to a cripple who has been
in therapy for IS years and tell him
that he will never walk again and
ought to give up? Mv father laugh!
me that practice makes perfect.
What ever happened to the old
saying, “It’s not if you win or lose,
but how you play the game?" Our
team has shown a marked improve-
ment under Bill Yung, and they set a
good example as good sports,
because only sore lovers give up.
You miss the best things in life if
"Our team has shown a marked im-
provement under Bill Yung, and they
set a good expample as good sports,
because only sore losers give up. ”
you approach everything with a
negative attitude UT El Paso's
football team, our team, deserves
three cheers: "Try, try, try again"

‘Miner Magic’
Editor,
l et us congratulate the "Miner
Magic” (that's what our football
program is called) The team kept its
record perfect by losing it sixth
straight game of the season to Kent
State.
"Miner Magic,” what an ap-
propriate name; you would need to
use magic to lose so often I wonder
when the "Miner Magic” will per-
form the best act — the disappear
ing act — from the program
On Oct. 6. The El Paso Times
wrote that the Miner Magic is mak
ing progress, but has a long way to
go Do you want to know the kind
of progress they have made? From
1972 to 1981, UT El Paso lost an
average of 87 percent of its games
from 1982 until now, it has only
lost an average of 85 percent, now
that's an improvement At this im
provement rate, they will need over
50 years to have a competitive team
assuming the "Magic" holds out
