assault upon R. II. Towers at the Polish
dance were before Justice Adam on Saturday
They however waived examination and were
each placed under a $500 bond to appear

District court. Powers is doing well.

Manuel Ingle and Dob Ingle well known
for their cattle depredations had a hearing
before Justice Johnson of 1'leasanton for
cattle stealing. There were several charges
gainst them and an aggregate bail of $3200
was placed upon them. This they cannot
give and as a result there is some probability
that they will be found when wanted for trial.

IuereiiHeil Taxation.
The County Commissioners silting as a
Hoard of Equalization have followed up their
action of taxing public institutions by affixing
a tax upon the Ursuline convent. The public
feeling against this taxation is very strong and
it is almost universally contended that it is
contrary to the spirit if not the letter of the
law upon which the action is based. Step
are being taken to have the matter tested in
the superior courts with the least possible dc
lay. The same board have raised the Sunset
railroad assesment to $91000 and upward
of $10000 of increased assessment has been
made.
The Kim Antoul'i Volunteer Militia.
An effort is being made to organize a Vol
unter militia In this city and there is every
reason to believe that it will be successful
San Antonians are by no means deficient in
patriotism and may fairly claim to have that
spirit of chivalry which was so brilliantly ex
hiblted when the founders of Texan Indepen
dence fought and died in the Alamo. Colmcl
Uelknap is at the head of this movement and
all who are disposed to join it are requested
to send their mmes to him Postnftice box

required and it will need no appeal from
the Light to urge the citizens to rally around
the old flag.

An energet'c committee are working to
secure a race meeting at the old fair ground
in August next and a good fund is being
raised to provide liberal purses. It Is pro
posed to have two races and one trotting race
on each day and to offer such prizes as shall
Induce good competition. That is right be
cause outside the trotting races such meet
ings have hitherto been a farce. Tcxis has
good stock and its people are fond of races.
There is therefore no reason why the San
Antonio races should not be of a character
that shall rival those of the Northern cities
and It only requires energy and public co-
operation to attain this end.
The Athletic Club Prospers. '
The. San Antonio Athletic club held a
meeting on Saturday night in the office of
Messrs. J. E. Labatt & Co. when 23 mem
bers were present. The managing committee
was increased to seven and the following
were added to it; Mr. Dane E. Kianhard Mr.
Harry Fowler Mr. M Freeborn and V. Pan-
coast. In future all members will be elected
by this committee who have instructions to
engage a gymnasium as soon as $250 has
been secured. The dues were fixed at $1
and may be increased or decreased according
to the requirements of the club. orty-two
members were added to the membership roll
and then the meeting adjourned until Wed-
nesday July 25.
Oh What uMlHtiike.
The Express says that the Light has just
discovered that there are opium dens in San
Antonio. As usual it is wrong. JThe Light
has long known of their existence and has
called public attention to them on several
occasions but when the Express man re-
hashed an article from a New York paper
making it refer to ihis city and scandalized
the citizens by saying that many respectable
ladies visited those dens it did them the
tice to deny the truth of the libel. Wherever
the Chinese are there will be opium smok
ing to a greater or lesser degree but having
regard to the extent and character of our pop-
u'ation it is less practiced here than in any
other city.
