• Winner of blood drive dedicates victory as memorial
By Deborah Martin
afr Wraer
Chi Gamma lota won first
place in the 1-10 Gift of Life
Rivalry Blood Drive, dedic rating
the victory to the memory of a
member who recently passed
away.
Fraternity president Gary
Salazar said life member Randy
Gorter died one month ago of
stomach cancer
“He was real active in the
blood droe and was one of their
major points of contact," he said
Salazar, a junior nursing ma
jor, credited the Texas Student
Nurses Association with assisting
them by placing the 32 pints they
received in Chi Gamma lota’s
name
They garnered a total of 68
pints of blood, seven short of the
minimum of 75 needed to win a
microwave oven. At the Nov II
senate meeting, Sen Frances
Lockridge suggested the senators
consider lowering the limit, par
tially because Chi Gamma lota is
a veterans’ organization and the
meeting wav held on Veterans’
Day The senators responded
favorably, a bill should he
presented at today’s meeting
P K Johns, director of donor
resources for United Blood Ser-
vices, said 360 pints of Mood
were gathered at the University
The all time University record of
489 pintv wav set in the spring ”<
1984 ‘‘so it’s better than we've
done in over a year." Johns said
Last fall’s total was 307 pints, and
27S pints were collected last
spring
New Mexko State retained the
trophy for the event, bringing in
965 pints of blood
Johns suspects one reason for
the big difference in the total lies
in the fact that thiv is a commuter
campus and NMSU is not. She
said another possible explanation
is the fact that the blood drive iv
a 10-year old tradition at NMSU,
whereas it has been held at IT
Il Paso for only three years
"We Mill aren't completely
satisfied that we are reaching the
potential at the University,” she
said, adding that United Blood
Services has set a goal of 500
pinta for the University
