Interim ‘didn’t make himself very popular’
Monroe’s selection surprised some in Missouri
By Janet Perez
* Sat Wrier
Former UT El Paw president Haskell Monroe may have
reached his new position as Chancellor of the University
of Misouri-Columbia by chance
• Les Carpenter, editor of the UMC student newspaper
The Man Eater, said interim Chancellor Duane Stucky
seemed to have the permanent chancellorship locked up
until Monroe entered the scene
"I think everyone thought (Stucky) was going to be
chancellor," he said.
However. Carpenter said that Stucky's handling of the
interim position created opposition
"He didn't make himself popular," he said.
Carpenter added that this may have been the result of
Stucky hav ing to follow the orders of C. Peter Me ( Grath,
President of the University of Missouri system.
The discontent with Stucky grew to the point that it at
tracted attention at Missouri’s capital, said John Bauman,
Faculty Coune il chairman
"Some of the politicians got into it,” he said
Carpenter said Miwouri State Representative Roger
Wilson “stumbled upon Monroe."
Monroe had not applied for the Chancellor-
ship at I MC when be wav selected last May, said Chris
Koukola, assistant vice chanc elior for I MC relation
Carpenter added that Stucky would probably have been
chosen chancellor if Monroe had not entered the picture
Bauman said another problem with Stucky way that he
wav an in house c candidate for the chancellor’s position
"The interim person her ame a candidate when we had
beet, told early on that he would not be." he said
Bauman added that one reason for opposition to Sluc ky
came from his association with a previous administration
“Mod of the opposition was that he came in with a group
from Oklahoma with the pact chancellor.” he said
Bauman said the group way referral r- a> the
“Oklahoma Mafia "
He added that Stucky i prw • Mi-ri I’ni
System vice president
Bauman alwo said that I MC was apparently troking toie
a chanc ellor with no ties to Mivunin
Monroe, Bauman said, was a special favorite because
of his emphasis on academics, while Suacky had never been
a profewor
"It didn’t cause any turmoil or splitting of the univer-
vity Mucky gave his full support to Monroe,” she said
Koukola said that the faculty had a strong input in the
selection of Monroe and added that the faculty was ple n
ed with him
Bauman agreed with Koukola and said that the Faculty
Council had appointed a 10-perwn subcommittee t» in-
terview every candidate for the chancellor’s position
