The National Senate now consists of 3S
Republicans 36 Democrats and two Keadjuj-
ters from Georgia. ' " '
Tlltti ts a woeful lack of complete returns
an the amendments election but it Is believed
that they have been carried.
Tilt Houston Tost editorially says "every-
thine must go but the mother-in-law." The
sentiment is a rjood one and we would like to
know If It was prompetdby coercion or gen-
uine admiration.
The arrangements have been completed for
the SUdc-Mitchell ptiie fight to take place
near V'inita In the Indian Territory the junc-
tion of the San Francisco and Missouri Pacific
rotds. The parties are now in training at
or near Kansas City
Tills does settle It; the Kloresville Chron-
icle says: "Some time since a rumor was
afloat that an alligator had been seen in the
river near the ferry. As we have heard noth
log of him lately we suppose he has gone to
San Antonio to hunt suicides."
Sfeakino of the Kerble-Meiican misunder
standing at San Pedro springs the Corpus
Christl Critic very sensibly and truly observes
"Better to accept his apology and say no
more about It as the least said in such mat-
ters it always the easiest mended. No good
either to Americans or Mexicans can come of
a further discussion of the outrage and for the
sake of good feeling that ought and does exist
between the two racer Ue episode should be
forgotten."
The head of the Census liureau having
been ordered by the Secretary of the Interior
to discharge half of hit 170 employees had the
names nf the entire number written on slips of
paper which slips were put in a box and 85
drawn therefrom by a blindfolded boy and
the names drawn out were the unfortunates
who were to have the grand bounce. A real
efficient clerk who is down on his luck won't
find much consolation In this new system of
dismissals.
Our Texas delegation says the Galveston
Newt "Is so constituted that each member
will have some special legislation to look
after. Senator Coke is the recognized cham-
pion of the tariff question Maxey on postal
matters and in the House Reagan on com-
merce Mills on finances and Ochiltree on
deep water." Our Tom not being strictly
speaking a temperance man no doubt has
had considerable experience in lifting
"schooners'" over a bar and the position at.
tigned him may have a slight personal sug'
gestlon
The County Commissioners ol Guadalupe
county have purchased T. 11. Miller's bridge
over the Guadalupe fur the turn of $12000
and will make It a free bridge whereat the
Seguin Times it very jubilant and predictt
much prosperity for that town In consequence.
It tayt 1 "Seguin with a free crossing a new
$30000 court house In course of erection
situated in the center of a splendid cotton re
gion with numerous falls In the Guadalupe
in close proximity furnishing magnificent
water power should leap to the front with a
boom second to no town In Southern Texas.
Let us sincerely (rust that the brightest antici
patlont of her enterprising citiient may be
realized and that 'Sleepy Seguin' shall no
longer be known as such but at one of the
nnst enterprising towns in the State."
The late panic In t'ockt on Wall ttreet
hid a suggestion of tome significance to the
country at large and a number of leading
papers viewed it with considerable alarm.
The Herald declares that the New York to.
Called financial barometer has "little relation
to the condition of this country" and pledget
Its judgment that "the fall in stocks has no
tlgnlficance whatever." The World pro-
nounces It "a gambler's panic not endanger-
ing in the least the legitimate interests of the
country." The New Orleans Times-Democrat
on the tame tubject tayt: "In the
South and West the flurry wat scarcely ap-
preciated or felt and the Western cities looked
with surprise toward New York unable to
understand what all the hubbub meant. This
feeling of alarm on the part of the Wettern
journals It prnbably because they remember
that the panic of 1 873 wat begun by the fail-
ure of a tingle banking house. It would be
absurd however to credit that crisis to the
failure of Jay Cooke & Co. It was due to
the condition of affairs then existing and at
the tame condition of affairs doet not exist to-
day ll It absurd to predict a panic from one
or many great failures just now."
It Is gravely asserted by the London
papers that there Is a communntic league in
the United States which Is going to foment
agitation against llritish investmtnts In Amer-
ican lands and that Its rnemben are going
to make the question of allowing
alient to become land owners in any
part of America a party one in the next presi-
dential election. The platform of this
league will comprise it Is tald the following
planks: 1. "English influence is too great in
American affairs; It thowt a natural tendency
to Anglicize the land laws. 2. If llritish
aliens are permitted to become owners of land
In America there will be a tteady growth of
English influence In American legislation in
which may ultimately prove Inconvenient and
dangerous. 3. Whatever land In America Is
owned by aliens Is so much national territory
withdrawn from the total amount possessed
by the country for the development of Amer-
ican wealth and so much taken away from a
possible American tenantry. 4. The tottering
aristocracy of a foreign nation should not be
allowed to reinvlgorate itsell at American ex-
pense and to bolster up and perpetuate the
landlord caste of Great llritain by draining to
London the profits of valuable holdings in
America. 5. Therefore the alleged league
'will demand and secure lawt prohibiting aliens
from owning land anywhere in America.' "
Thtt is the story according to the Pall Mall
Gazetteand to tay the least is a Scheme from
Schemeville. Of all the alien population in
these United States the llritish probably
number the least and their influence as com-
pared with the German and Irish is very
small and insignificant and the absurdity of
the move it only equalled by the readiness of
the English papers to give credence to It.
Politically socially or financially Englishmen
are in a great minority in the United States
even if there was no account taken of the
number who have renounced their allegiance
to the Queen and it the buying of a few mil-
lions of acres of land more or less would
have builded up any one interest the United
States would have been told out long ago to
the other alient who almost since the landing
of the Mayflower have regularly followed
each other to this land of the free. Cut one
needs only to remember that the investment
of money In lands carries with it the natural
guarantee of good citizenship and a true
fealty to the laws of the Republic regardless
of landlord caste or aristocratic influence to
see how easily our cousins can be scared and
to what lengths they are willing to carry
their credulity.
