THE REPORTERS PRIZE.
WI1.1t tin- I'l-opleNiiy About the 1'rle Cup
A mini.
Andrew Wren t "I thought sure the Light
or Express would be awarded the prle."
Harry llaum : "The award surprised me."
Dr. Hadra: "I am surprised. The Lioiit
is the only paper that made a correct report of
my address."
A learned land agent: "What could you
expect when two of the committee are In-
terested In the Times."
Prolessor Katzenberger : It's a d d
shame 1 The Light is the only paper that
gave a correct report of my muilc and the
operetta."
Alderman Gallagher : "I read all the re-
ports carefully and was so sure that the Light
made the best report I would have bet $1000
on its getting the first prize.
International and Great Northern railroad
man: "It looks like a huge joke; there must
be some mistake."
A country newspaper man : "I believe the
Judges are honest but they are not Infallible.
The Light certainly gave the best report."
THE HALPERT CASE.
A Second Charge Is Made Against tho
Accused And lie Is llrlil
Ou lleaty lloud.
Another affidavit was made yesterday be-
fore Justice Adam by F. Groos against Ralph
Halpert alias C. J. Dewey charging him
with defrauding Messrs. Kidder Peabody &
Co. of Boston of $30000 by means of a
false pretense. This was necessary to detain
the accused on account of the Illegality of the
first proceedings. The habeas corpus peti-
tion came before Judge Noonan this morning
who quashed the first proceedings and ordered
the prisoner to be held on the second affidavit
on a bond of $10000; at the same time he
continued the habeas corpus petition until
Tuesday next to admit of the attendance of
important witnesses. Police Inspector Hans-
combe arrived here on Sunday. He had not
yet seen the accused and lu.-nor says that he
has gone on to California to see the other
man arrested there and to get the required
witnesses.
Hh.it lie Descries.
The Express says: " Poor Taylor'a cup of
misery Is not full enough yet and now comes
a protest before the Volksfest committee.
Too bad too bad. He Is a total wreck.
Some of his friends should call for an inves-
tigation before Judge Mason on a writ of lu-
natico inquirendo." We do not know
who is the author of the above
paragraph but it is certainly un-
called for and Is the production of a decided
lunatic. II Barnes who was in danger of
being sent to the osjlum tome time ago it
was certainly In bad taste. If it was that
Cotton we are not surprised. He ratted
durirg the printers' strike and will of course
desert his brother reporters In their efforts for
justice. Cotton deterves not a silver cup
nor even a tin cup or a putty medal. A
"stale cheese" is the best award that can be
made him and we recommend that some en-
terprising citizen make him a present of that
character.
Abducted By Her Husband
A telegram from St. John New Brunswick
to The toronto Globe sayt: A great sensa-
tion has been caused here by a cate of wife-
abduction. About thiee years ago Miss Lena
Robinson a handsome young lady whose la-
ther occupies a prominent position In connec-
tion with the Government Savings bank in
that city was secretly mirrled at Amherst
New York to De Blavler Carritte a son of
Dr. Carritte ol that place contrary to the
wishes other parents who had a more eligi-
ble partner In view. The couple separated
Immediately after the ceremony the lady re-
turning to her parents and Carritte going to
New York. When the tecret leaked out there
was great indignation in the Robinton house-
hold and it was determined that a divorce
should be procured. For this purpoie it Is
said the young lady resided in one of the
Eastern States for sometime but Carritte was
determinedly opposed to any such proceeding
and the lady was brought home. Carritte re-
turned to St. John this year and established
himself in business. He was not allowed to
approach his wife. About 10 o'clock on Rat.
urday night accompanied by friends he fol
lowed Air. Komnson ana nit daughter toward
their home and when in a dark street assault-
ed Mr. Robinson and seized the young lady
and putting her in a coach on hand for the
purpose drove off. This morning Carritte
and his wife were found In a city hotel where
they had arrived about 2 a. m. after a drive
around some country roads. Carritte was ar-
rested on a warrant for assault Information
having been laid against him by Mr. Robin-
son The young husband acted on legal ad-
vice and it is beleived that the young lady
was privy to the abduction. The parties move
in the best social circles.
