TUESDAY OCTOIIKU30 1883
San Antonio needs a $75000 opera home
among the olher greit Improvements being
made.
The El Paso Times says: "It is rather
strange that the universal verdict out here on
the border is lhat the only 'good' Indians are
deid ones pirticularly if they belong to the
Apache family."
Till Brrnhim Banner philosopher observes
that "one place is about as good at another
for starting a paper which li a very easy
matter. The difficulty it in making a news-
paper slick alter it it started."
The following compliment it from the
Ilillsboro Mirror: "The San Antonio
Light it one of the best evening papert pub-
lished In the South. It far eiceedt the even-
ing papers of Baltimore for newt and in typo-
graphical appearance."
Tlir'Washington Critic leads Its readert to
draw a conclusion In the following: "Tom
Ochiltree taid Irvicg wat 'a bad actor' and
it it now given out that the advance agent is
going to have it printed on the hand bills at a
boom for the English tragedian."
The Gatetvllle Advance hat not got a great
deal of faith In the scheme ol dividing the
State and tayt: "Occasionally we tee in
tome paper an allusion of one kind or another
to a division of Texas. When parallel lines
begin to approach each other; when the last
drop of Texan blood hat ceaied to flow;
when Dao McGary quit! drinking beer then
and not till then will Texas be divided."
The lost St. Louis maiden Mary Churchill
hat come to the front again in a letter from
Indianapolit to her father in which the de-
nies that the is 00 the ttage or had eloped.
This of course will relieve the tuipenie and
anxiety on the part of relatives and (riendt
but there must be something wrong in the
mind of a person who would cause to
mu-.h trouble without any apparent motive or
purpose.
That racific slope cyclone that the weather
prophelt have been looking for teemt to hvre
flipped In at the back door almott down in
Louisiana. A telegram from Waterproof In
that Slate tellt of the appearance of a cyclone
in the parlihetof Tensatand Catahoula on
yesterday morning blowing down barnt and
houses and wounding quite a number of
people. In one instance a house wat blown
down in which a woman etcaped but three
children were not found.
Tux Lie it has received the October num-
ber of the Texas Courier Record of Medicine
published at Fort Worth edited by J. E.
Daniel M. D. and E L. Stroud M. D.
The magailne contains more than Co pages of
reading mat'er of more than general Interest
on subjects of every-day occurrence to be
found in the practice of every physician and
In the family and is worthy of a generous
patronage both from the public at well at the
physiciant.
Senator Eaton of Connecticut knowt
the failings of the Democracy too well and
when asked the question "What do you
think of the prospect lor 1884 Senator!"
" Don't knew." " Well aren't our pros-
pect! pretty bright!" "Don't know."
" Hasn't Ohio gone Democratic !" " Why
yei." " What! the trouble Ihrn !" " I'll
tell you" said the Senator pressing his thin
llpi together " the Democracy vears aeo
took out a patent for making d d fools of
themielvet and it hat never been Infringed
upon."
San Antonio it one among the largett
wool markets In the United States and it the
headquarters for the wool growing Interest In
all the Southwest and much of eastern aid
southern Mexico. With to much capital
directly operating In thlt induttry It lookt
somewhat singular lhat so few woolen mills
have been established and put In operation
in this city and vicinity. The power can be
found cheap in the river and labor is but a
trifle more expensive here in that particular
branch than further east or touth. The mills
at New Braunfels are a tuccett and have
turned out a molt excellent grade of cloth and
woolen goodt generally. They employ about
40 hands running about 150 spindles and 12
looms and find a ready market for all the
goods they produce. Along with Ihe building
boom San Antonio should have a manufactur-
ing boom and among the first Industries
should be woolen mills.
A s revet Joe Mulhatton has got Into the
Laredo Times office and in a letter from VII-
laldama Mexico he tells about a blaring
meteor crowbar in form that fell from the
heavens through the roof of a Mexican's
house and through Ihe leaf of a sewing ma-
chine at which a young lady was working at
the lime and then Into the stone floor to the
distance of a foot and a half. The Times cor-
respondent says: "It has now been 48 hours
since this strange meteor as it may properly
be termed ttruck Ihe earth and it It to all
Intenti and purpotet at hot at when it first
reached here and emits the same strange red
glow. As before said any metal except Iron
receives no damage by being touched to it
but wood paper or in fact anything lave
metal that hat yet been experimented with
seem to melt and disappear as if in a vapor
immediately upon being brought Into contact
with It. It has been thrown into the yard
where it still lies and at night is of sufficient
brilliancy to read by at a distance of 100 feet.
This Is one of the greatest curiosities that has
ever visited the earth and should be bought
by tome naturalist."
The papers all over the Slate are a unit in
the opinion that the special session of the
Legislature should make a suitable appropria-
tion In order that Texas may be properly rep-
resented at the New Orleans cotton exposi-
tion in 18S4. The Bandera Bugle has the
following on Ihe subject: "One of the
reasons for calling the extra session of the
Legislature Is to determine whether or not the
State shall be repreiented at the exposition to
be held In New Orleans in 18S4 and if to
provide therefor. It it to be hoped there will
be no halting in the deciding at to the advisa-
bility of being represented and no stinginess
in the appropriation for litis object. The
South after a bloody bunting of her swad-
dling clothes In the late war hat taken well
nigh 20 years of patient struggling and
thought to realize her gigantic possibilities.
This exposition ought to show her young
Titanic strength and the possibility of her
taking front rank in the world's commercial
induttry. Texas.because of her sire because
of her products because of her geographical
position and because of her climatic advan-
tages ought and will ultimately be the lead-
ing State of the South and therefore should
be conspicuously represented at this expo-
sition." A valued correspondent of the Light
makes the following most sensible sugges-
tions regarding the criminal business in our
courts : "If it can be done it would be a
very great Improvement to establish exclusive-
ly criminal District courts in each one of the
judicial districts In the State with quarterly
terms. Every person charged with an offence
is entitled to a speedy trial and where the
punishment is prompt the law becomes a ter-
ror to evil doers. It Is very expensive to keep
the jails lull of prisoners for teveral consecu-
tive montht awaitinc trial. So many Iawlett
men from olher States are flocking into Texas
that the criminal docket is likely to be large
for tome yean to come and the Legislature
ought to provide the means for prompt and
speedy trials. The Criminal District courtt
might be abolished so soon as the necessity
for them shall have gone by indeed the law
creating them might limit their duration to
the time of three years and might make their
salaries payable by the counties in aliquot
proportions. Some measure to insure prompt
and speedy trials Is of absolute necessity-
no one can question this fact and It devolves
upon the Legislature to devise the proper
remedy. The writer is wedded to no par-
ticular scheme and is not a candidate for any
of Ihe judicial offices to be created and could
not if he desired be a candidate. So his
proposal has no flavor of a tlnitter motive In
it. The fence troublet will 'pan out' many
indictments in all probability and increase
the criminal docket."
