PROGRESS OF CULTURE IN THE CITY
OF SAN ANTONIO.

There was a meeting last night at
Schola's ball for the purpo.o of
forming an association of a literary
and scientific character and to consider
the possibility of forming a museum In
Snn Antonio. The following gentlemen
attended: Itev. Isidore Lewlnthal
Professor William Hole. Dr. George
Christian Professor Qustav Jenny Dr.
ll.JIenger Dr. M. Lindner Theodore
Itozlcne C. Hunge Nat Sulzbacher
Joseph Waldaucr AV. J. Walters II.
Wahomann It. A. Holland It. Ityder-
Taylor Mr. Ilarnes and others.
Dr. Christian In calling the meeting
to order said that most of those who
were present were aware of the object
of the meeting; that It was for the pur-
pose of organizing an association In San
Antonio for the cultivation of the "belles
lettres" science and natural philosophy;
In fact all those department of art and
literature which tend to make an ele-
vated manhood combining at the same
tlmo social Intercourse. A few of them
had met together a day or two since
and having discussed this subject In a
premature way decided upon fixing n
formal meeting for that evening when
It was tho Intention to discuss the best
methods of action for the future.
Dr. M. Lindner then read the minutes
of the last meeting stating that the con-
tributions already obtained toward
effecting their purpose amounted to $110.
Dr. Christian suggested there was n
sufilclent number present to appoint the
necessary officers ond to get tho matter
permanently organized; the success of
the undertaking could no doubt be se-
cured If the necessary amount of energy
and perseverance was brought to bear
on the schcssujitch would result In no
little good to tlicflW'lvcs and to the rest
of the citizens of San Antonio and If
they could excite an Interest In It there
were thousands of people In this city who
were talented both In art and science
and who would assist by their means
and Influence to establish a literary and
sclentlfia association and especially
a museum. There was the speak-
er considered no method In the
world equal to object teaching
when you present a subject to
tho eye you make an Impression that Is
everlasting and we scarcely ever forget;
It seems to be photographed on the bruin.
Though It may remain dormant In tho
brain for yeais directly the association
by some suggestive object is created It
springs into the memory. When
you see the son you think of
the father and mother; when
you see a flower you think of tho
climate and country in which it grew.
From an educational point of view the
value of a museum Is incalculable. The
Idea In this proposed organization the
gentleman said was not to confine the
association to one special branch but
to embrace mechanism and its kindred
subjects sclenco chemistry physiology
botany as well as literature and
art. Tho speaker mentioned a sug-
gestion of Dr. Lewlnthal wblcb he
considered a very valuable one It was
to establish n scries of lectures and ex-
positions. Let it bo positively under-
stood tho Institution was to be In no
way n monev maklns venture but
entirely a self sacrifice on the part of
mose who inieresieu uiemseives in the
movement.
It would also be a very valuable
adjunct to the city Itself not only for
the benefit of the citizens but also to
attract the attention of the thousand of
strangers wno were constantly In the
city.
The following officers were then nomi-
nated and duly elected:
President. Itev. I. Lewlnthal: Vice
Presidents Dr. George Christian Prof.
W. C.liote.lt. A. Holland U. Itungeand
Dr. It. Jlenger: Treasurer Dr. Lindner;
Secretary 0. M. Barnes.
Professor Gustav Jermy was unani-
mously elected Director of Museum. A
committee to Investigate the matter
of location was then appointed consist
ing or ur. i.inuner. rroiessor Koto ana
itev. J. i.ewiiunai. committee to re
port on constitution and by-law. : Di
Christian C. JI. Ilarnes II. llyder-Tay
lor and Dr. It. Meneer.
Dr. Lindner was appointed ns a special
nnnncG committee.
Professor Jermy oflered his valuable
collection of fossils minerals and nat
ural history to form the nucleus of the
museum and In a short and enthuslnstlo
speech stated he would do all he possi-
bly could to further the Interests- of the
association.
Dr. Lindner read a letter from anntlier
gentleman possessing aline collection of
snai.es wno ouereu to deposit samo in
nroDosed museum.
It was suggested by Mr. C. Jt. Ilarnes
that a committee of location confer with
Mayor French and Governor Ireland
with reference to obtaining the Alamo
for the nurnoseof tho socletv.
It was decided to name the organiza
tion "The iexas Museum Hclentlllo and
