Ito for Bn Francisco El I'aso and Kigla
Tuesday. December 2 1884.
Tins races brought a considerable
number of visitors to San Antonio. The
pickpockets alto flocked here to ply their
game and y lctla.lr.ed tome of our coun-
try cousins.
It is the duty of San Antonlnns to fos-
ter every enterprlscln the way of manu-
facturing now established In the city
and such a purpose will make every one
ot them successful.
Sect week San Antonio will have the
pleasure of enloylng genuine French
opera with Madame Theo and her mag-
nificent company. This Is likely to be
the event of the season.
It bounds strangely to hear of n
European Congress sitting to discuss
the Congo question. Thoso crowned
beads are grasping meddlesome and Im-
pudent. They are alllucnt In cheek.
Aijikaiiv the Democracy Is finding
fault with Nast's cartoons In Harper's.
Hut during the campaign when they
were directed against Mr. Illatne there
was not the least objection. Harper's
will soon be In the position ot the devil
and the deep sea.
Cosiiiie-wuan Morrison Is reported as
saying a few days ago In reply to the
question of whether he Intended to let
the tariff question alone promptly re-
plied : "Not by a d d sight." Con
sequently II may be Inferred that this
great American tree trader Is still on
deck.
Tiik pension and the Illalr educational
bills passed the Senate last winter and
are now on the Speaker's desk. The
tobacco tax repeal proposition and the
Spanish treaty If passed In connection
with Illalr and pension bills will absorb
about $01000000 of revenue annually
Tits liberally signed petition calling
upon General II. C. King to allow his
name to be used as a candidate for
Mayor ought not to deny the publlo of
other tickets nor should It materially
affect the budding booms ot any other
aspirants for that most Important posi-
tion. It will be proper and necessary In
view of the numerous reports In circula-
tion and the many complaints made for
the Legislature to Investigate the State
rangers. Where there Is so much com-
plaint there must be something amiss.
The rangers are not above the laws
which all other citizens are required to
obey.
Tiik statistical account of the produc-
tion of wool throughout the civilized
world shows that In the year 1830 It was
320000000 pounds In 1871 It was nearly
2000000000 pounds while In 18S3 In the
United States alone the production of
wool was 320000000 pounds or as much
as was produced in the whole world In
1830.
The Kaufman Sun wickedly believes
revenge Is sweet and says: 'Tbelte-
publlcan party has for several years
been considerably enriched by the bets
won from enthusiastic. Democrats but
this time the money has gone the other
way and In consequence there has been
many n wry face made and many a
smothered exclamation which would not
look well In print."
Snuma of the mention of Captain
Jack Klgtn of Waco for the position of
United States Marshal of the Western
district of Texas the Houston Journal
cays: "(lood as far as It goes but Ills
probablo that It will bo a remote day
when Hal (losllng will be disturbed In
his Incumbency. Gosling tn llepubll- '
can but he Is n good man an excellent
ofllccr and has n host of Democratic
friends among whom I; the Journal."
What are the tlircclors or Iho Aransas
railroad doing lo push the scheme for- I
ward? It requires to be actively pushed '
nt this time and the directors should
not sutler the Interest In It toflagby any
tlllator'ness and lukcwnrmness on their
part. I lie sooner a part of It Is let out j
tocontr it Iho better ns sucli a step
will shon' ue are In earnest and beget
confidence In tho peoplo between hero
and Aransas. Subscrlptlonsln land will
enable the road to borrow the funds to
bulhl II. and these subscriptions should
be energetically canvassed for and so-
Helled along the line of the proposed
road.
Tiik Cincinnati Times-Star says; "It
has been asserted by free trade organs
that the protection Issue did Mr. Illalne
far more harm than good. The slate-
niciit Is not sustained by tacts. The ten
Stales of Ohio Pennsylvania Wiscon-
sin New York Michigan .Massachu-
setts Illinois Kansas Indiana nuil Cali-
fornia gate Democratic majorities In
ISS2 aggregating 317.000. On November
I these ten Stales gave Itepubllcan tun- '
Jorllles aggregating 31.1000. A change
of over half n million votes In n cam- I
pnlgn In which protection wnsthe lead- i
Ing Issue and which materially reduced
the Democratic Congressional majority 1
does not show Hint It was n mistake to !
force the tarllT Issue."
Tiik correspondents and the Knstcrn
papers are making much ado about the
.i ll ll.nl nnomnr llelutrloLa
made upon Governor Cleveland nnd ac-
cording to all the reports thero was no
falling upon necks or Joyous greetings
on the part of the 1'resldent elect: In
fuel he Is said to have received Mr. Hen-
dricks very coolly. It will bo remem-
bered that Mr. Hendricks stopped In his
upcu'h making tour long enough ono
time last summer lo write n letter from
Dubuque tacitly advising that tho head
or the ticket be withdrawn which It Is
safe to say did not delight Mr. Cleve-
land to any great extent. Hut It Is quite
evident that Mr. Hendricks will ri main
as he was on a former occasion simply
Tim: lews of Governor Gllck of Kan
sas who Is a breeder of line cattle In a
mild way regarding Iho proposed cat-
tle trail from some point on I!ed river lo
tho Xoithwest will not find favor with
the cattle kings or their Interests In the
Southwest. He positively asserts that
tho Kansas Legislature will repeal tho
present established trail through West
ern Kansas not through any 111 will
towards Texas cattle but os a matter of
self protection. This so called Texas
cattle fever Is a veiy peculiar disease
and In no manner affects nntlve Texas
cattle but It Is asserted that when herds
have been drl en through pastures of
Kansas the feverbas attacked the cattle
there and was only slopped after It had
spread through Iho territory traveled
andlelt but few survivors. Governor
Gllck asserts that Kansas farmers lost
$.Vi00li0 last year through the ravages of
the fever ami that n trail to bo practical
should be 100 tulles wide. Instead of six
suggested by the convention.
anvi.it.MUt Cir.vra.AKii sajs he would
prefer as quiet an Inauguration ns pos
sible" observes tho Washington Critic.
Ho docs not want n big demonstration.
He says however that the mailer Is not
In his hands and will be attended to
here In Washington He Is right. It
will be attended to here and Governor
Cleveland will find out that It Is not
going to be any small quiet all'alr. It Is
going to be the biggest sort of n time.
The town about the middle of February
will begin to assume a reddish brown
hue lly the 1th of the following month
It will bo n vivid crimson. And the
paint will bo so well rubbed In that It
will be many days before Washington
resumes Its natural color and condition
of life. Already the preliminary steps
ore being taken. Somo peoplo are en
deavoring to get up a Utile had feeling
by saying that this man or that man
ought not to have n prominent part In
preparing for the great event. These
people will be so promptly sat down
upon that they will think there Is n pile
driver somewhere In the vicinity. The
people of this city cannot afl'ord to squab
hie In dealing with so national an all'alr
ns the Inauguration of a 1'resldent.
ACUTE AND CHRONIC
L. V.
All persons fullering with Pulmonary
troubles will do well to cnll on Dr. I. v.
Weathers of this city. He treats I.ung
troubles by medicated sprays which Is
thrown Into the throat finding Its way
through the respiratory organs Into all
diseased lung tissues. Any other mode
Is like n tire engine exhausting Its
strength upon tho side of n burning
building when the llanies are rapidly
consuming the body. Dr. Weathers Is a
craduate of the Jell'erson Medical Col
lege of Philadelphia with such men of
distinction nnd renown as Gross I'an-
coast Durgllson and others of like char-
acter as teachers and authors. With 18
j ears of successful practice he feels that
lie can stny In San Antonio notwith-
standing a disposition of a few venomous
spirits who try nnd elbow lilni out of
puuiio lavor.

K II. Choate came to San Antonio
after a cough for two years with hem-
orrhages and finally levers and night
sweats until life hail been despaired of.
He was referred to Dr. Weathers of this
city under whose treatment Mr. Choate
Is to-day n stout active man. In the
language of Mr Choate " My case was
considered hopeless by all who knew
me."
We as citizens of San Antonio know-
ing Mr. Choate considered his case
hopeless when he went to Dr. Weathers
of this city for treatment nnd all felt
