aentlemen of tho Count 1 1
In assuming the duties that comn
fore me as the Mayor of the city It Is
my first request to appeal to every one
or you to glvo mo your earnest support.
Wti have a common work to do and we
must unite In our efforts to achieve It
for tho good of our city. I hope we shall
not allow ony personal feeling or disap-
pointment any exlst.whlch 1 do not be-
llove.to exert any Influence In our delib-
erations. We have but one object to at-
tain. I was elected as a Democrat upon a
Democratlo platform on a progressive
and liberal one but I would
first recommend to tho Council
the adoption of a system of drainage of
tho city of San Aatonb. I think It one
of the most vital and Important ques-
tions that now stare In our face. We
aro surrounded by epidemics and thej
may not be far oft but still (and I hope
we will never have to sutler from them)
there'ts nothing like being prepared for
them and to have our city cleansed and
to be prepared for all emergencies. The
' next thing which was omitted In tho
platrorm is the subject of high schools.
1 am In favor of supporting them to the
fullest extent that the funds of the city
will allow. Uno moro remark nnd It
is this in the construction of ptibllo Im-
provements I favor the employment of
homo labor.

young charges to be well advanced apt
and bright and showed wonderful ad-
vancement. Mies Texann Bossy teaches tho fourth

tho most dlfllcult problems were solved
by the little ones. Botany Is taught In
all tho looms and If each class was as
good as Miss Bossy's it is to be regret-
ed that all were not heard by the visitors.
It Is to be regretted that the others of
tho visiting committee of tho City Coun-

N STAGE ROBBERS.
Tho Man Who nobbed tho Led.
better Coach.
The particulars of the robbing of the
Lcdbettcr stago near I.aOrango two
days before Christmas Is doubtless still
fresh In the memory of Tut: I. unit's
readers. It will be remembered that
Dr. Cock was robbed on that oc-
casion of his gold watch and $50.
Yesterdny morning the perpetrator or
tho robbery was enptttred bo having
hitherto eluded the ofllccrs or Justice.
The hlghwnyiunn's natno Is Charles Can-
non and he came to Texas fron North
Curollna. At the time of his arrest ho
was employed as a herder on n ranch
near Uvalde and his guilt wus discov-
ered by he having In his possession Dr.
Cock's gold wntch. He was taken down
to LnUrnnge by Mr. Bankin thel.n-
rnyetto county Sheriff. Charles Cannon
Is a young mnu about 21 yeora orage
and be attributes his criminal conduct
on account or his constantly reading
dime novels and the trashy sensational
story papers. The young matt has
fully con less td his guilt and U very
penitent. He gave Dr. Cock n short
sketch of his life and said that when he
came to Texas he was entirely without
money and he stole n horse and fell In
with some desperados with whom he
agreed to rob a train on tho Northwest-
ern narrow gauge. The proposed train
consisted or a passenger coach and en-
gine and they were suocesslul tn stop-
ping the train but at Unit critical point
Cannon's companion ran away and Cnn-
non robbed the passengers who con-
sisted ot three. The amount ol money
stolen however was small. His
partner In the meanwhile made
good his escapo by stealing Can-
noil's horse and left him to travel on foot
as best he might. He reached Lam-
pasas and ono Sunday afternoon lio at-
tended church there. In the middle of
the service he walked out and selected
the best horse ha could llnd standing
around tho church and rotle olf. He
soon after robbed the Ledbetter stage
and after that exploit he crossed the
country until he came to Harwood Sta.
'tlon. Here he turned his horse adrift
and burled the saddle. Hiding on n
and remained here for three days ami
then obtained a place as herder on n
ranch. A reward of $1W was offered for
his arrest but up to the present tltno no
clue had been dlscoveredaiidir tho cold
watch had not been recognized. It Is
probable he would hava been unsus-
pected. .
The annual ball given last Saturday
night at Casino hall by the Mechanics
and Worklngtnen's Union was very
poorly attended though this rendered
the allalr not the less enjoyable for thoso
who attended. The Eighth cavalry bantl
furnished excellent music.
