A Man at a sunset Depot Lodging

Tramps Arrested.
Olllcer .Martin was after the vagrants
and tnsplolous characters loallng around
the Sunset depot early this morning nnd
picked up four of them. About :i::tO tills
morning lie heard a pistol shot coming
from .Mr. -Mike JlcDcnnolt's saloon on
Austin street and running there he met
.Mr. .McDerinott with a pistol who
Informed him that he believed he had
killed a man who was trying to force his
way Into his saloon by the back way.
Together they searched for the corpse
but found nothing except tho bullet hole
In the wall about two feet to the right
of the window casing In the rear of the
saloon which window was open lie
told the olllcer that he had gone to bed
but n few minutes nnd had closed the
saloon n lien he heard n peculiar kind
of snapping sound followed by the
sound of n window being raised. Then
lie Heard tne uenvy window curlnlns
being raised nnd he got up nnd took his
bull dog pistol and crept out to see If a
burglar was entering. Sure enough the
body of a limn was just crawling through
the window and the fellow was half
way Inside when .Mr. McDermott tired
his pistol Tho limn was not lilt and
escaped.
Olllcer .Martin had noticed dome sus-
picious looking men loallng about the
saloon and depot last night and prompt-
ly went In srnrch of them. This morn-
ing he snw n mini come out of McUhee's
lodging home nnd cross over to the rail-
road track. He followed and the man
begun running townrd Dlgnowlty hill.
Martin thinking this fellow might lead
him to the gang gave chase but soon
saw a smoke rising from the brush and
struck out for that thinking to Ilml the
gang around n camp lire lie found the
lire and one tramp n Uerman sitting by
It. The others had probably scattered.
lie arrested the Uerman anil afterwards
three other suspicious characters.
This morning nt the police station a
mnn named M . S. llryan came and re-
ported that he had been robbed of f.VI
nnd n pair of boots early this morning
at .McUhee's lodging bouse lie snld he
was u plasterer nml mason and went up
stnlrs to bed. Another lodger whom he
did not know was asleep In another bed
In the same room hut he paid no atten-
tion to hlni. This morning when he
awoke his money nnd boots were gone
so was his room-mate. .Mr. -McUhee
says he snw this lodger leave the house
about da light but as this was no tin-
usual occurrence he paid no attention
to hlni. This mnn evidently was one of
the gang nnd can probably tell where

A Light Fingered Negro Arrested
on SusDlclon.
Last Saturday nfternoon n negro
named Jim .McAllister was paid $0 for
some work done and mot n Mr. Smith
whom he owed and told him ho would
see him that evening nnd pay hint. A
negronomed Hilly Washington who wns
wltn Jim when he got his money at
Krost's store wns walking along with
him when he talked to Smith. Hilly
snw Jlm put the money In his vest
pocket and while they were engaged in
conversation Hilly took Jim's lead pencil
from thlssnme vest pocket nnd begun
sharpening It with a knife. When they
left .Smith Jim found his money gone
and his pencil In Washington's hnnds
and licensed hlin of the theft which he
denied. Washington was arrested tried
and acquitted or the charge or being a

testllled that this wns the third com-
plaint against Washington Jrom parties
who had lost small sums of monev and
at n restaurant on North Kloreo street
not long ago tho imnlry was broken
open and relieved of a lot of provisions.
Washington was at once suspected but

Mayor's office yesterday afternoon nnd
proceeded to hold an Impromptu meet-
ing ol the committee. The petition or
citizens complaining of the condition or
San Marcos street was examined and
the committee decided to recommend
Hint the street be ploughed nnd graded.
Petition of citizens on Cherry nnd
Sherman streets for reduction of Assess-
ment and for graded sidewalks will be
recommended to the assessment com-
mittee and to the City Engineer.
A notltlcntlon was received from the
Water Works company of the planting
or eight new lire hydrants for the city.
It was recommended that Hilt be re-
ferred to tho Gas and Water committee
payments to commence on the hydrants
