Sweating Gold.
A Mr. Cunningham while passings
Chlneso laundry on Houston street n few
evenings ago noticed tho celestial en-
gaged In busily Ironing shirts seemingly.
He would Iron nwhllo then drop his Iron
and pick up ft little bag nnd shake It vig-
orously n few moments and then care-
fully examine the linen shirt front nnd
collect something from the surface. The
Idea occurred to -Mr. Sullivan that John
waa engaged In cheating the Govern-
ment by obtaining gold dint rrom gold
coin by the process known ns "sweat-
ing" by which the coins arc churned
together nnd small particles or gold
thereby rubbed on". Verily for wajs
that nro dark the heathen Culneo Is pe-
culiar. Tho Aransas Hood.
IMItorSan Antoclo Unlit.
The last excuse for not building the
San Antonio and Aransas Pass railroad
lias disappeared. The tnocsbacks can-
not any longer piend hard times and
sonrctty of money. The proposition of
Mr. Piper nnd associates ennblcs tho
citizens of San Antonio to build control
nnd operate this Important road almost
without the outlay of a dollar as there
can bo very little doubt but the earnings
will be much more than the interest on
the bonds. Wonder If there are any so
non-progressive ns to object to having
the road built free of cost simply be-
cause some one wont make them n pres-
ent of It when completed. Just tblnk
what nn Imtncnio benefit It would be to
the laborers mechanics and business
men of this city to have n million and u
half of dollars of foreign capital ex-
pended In this section during the next
two years. It would do more to revive
the waning prosperity of San Antonio
than any other contemplated project.
Hy nil means build the road now t hero
Is nn opportunity. T. H. M.

Hown Vassnr Girl Met Her Lover.
A correspondent tells the following
story about n Vassnr girl her lowr and
her little red sled: "She was n beauty
and as proud and snucy ns n queen. She
had been sent to Vassar to be protected
from n dreadful young mnn who was In
love with her. It presently cntne to the
cars of the faculty that this bold young
man had followed her to Poughkcepsle
and waa lying In wait to stent her nnd
carry her oil'. The faculty did not sleep
n wink for u week. At the end of that
time Itomeo had not appeared and tho
faculty began to breathe more easily.
"All this time the poor girl bad been
nllowed no exercise except what she
could get by coasting on the little hill In
plain iew of the college windows. She
ulwava choseto iro alone but u little bin-
In short trousers red stockings and red
mittens would come over to the hilt ami
steer her sled nnd drag It tip to the top
or the slide. That poor foolish old
laculty doesn't know to tills day that
the little fellow in boy's clothes who
camo nnd played with their captive
every day under their very noses wns
the dreadful young man tuev were nil
much afraid or. The vounir tienntn
had too much sound sense to elope with
each oilier but they managed to get n
good deal of enjoyment out of riding
down hill on the same sled."
Women In Texas.
from tho Woman's Journal.
There nro n great many handsome
men in Texas. Tho free outdoor life
with much horseback riding gives them
good forms clear eyes nnd complexions.
There Is a grent deal of native Intelli-
gence and good thinking. Tho women
nniong the well-do-to classes appear lo
live mostly Indoors. Even in cities very
few nre seen on the street or In the
stores. They are not ns often rosy-
cheeked as the men but much oftencr
powdered. Living with doors nnd win-
dows open a large part ot the year and
In houses all the year that let inulroit
every side It seems strange that they do
not look fresher. At one place where
the railroad missed the town n mile
and all tbe stores had been taken to the
depot wo asked how they got to tho
stores through the mud?
"Oh we never go; the men go on
horscbaok and they do the buying."
so It Is not uncommon to see men buy-
ing dress goods stockings and other ar-
ticles of women's wear. Good help is
scarce and the women usually do the
housekeeping In a few rooms every one
of which has one or more beds In It.
Their tlmldhy Is so great that they ob.
Ject to two-story houses "becauso the
wind blows." tor recreation many dip
snulfand read stories. Old snull'-dlppers
look snull'-colored. Among the poorer
classes women work In the fields at cot-
ton raising. Hoeing nnd picking nre
done by hand nnd what one man can
plant and plow several hands are re-
quired to hoe nnd pick. Hut raising
cotton Is clean farm work. There are
no briars to scratch or Juice to stain the
hands. The stooping Is tiresome but
less so than picking strawberries. Chil-
dren are valuable pickers being nimble
and of sultablo height. We have seen
Utile girls who had picked hundreds or
pounds wllh sunbonncts nnd mils on In
the hot sun who were not tanned at all.
In years when the crop Is good wages
are high and many well-to-do women
go out nnd pick cotton. They are paid
by the 100 pounds.
Thoussads Sly So.
Mr. T. W. Atkins Glrard Kas. writes:
'I never hesitate to recommend your
Lleclrlo Hitters to my customers; they
give entire satisfaction and are rapid
tellers." Lleclrlo Hitters are the pttreta
and best medicine known and will pos-
itively cure Kidney and Liver com-
plaints. Purify the blood and regulate
the bowels. Ho ramlly can afford to be
without them. They will save hundreds
of dollars lu doctors' bills every year.
