BLACKLAND CHECK —
Cattlemen Are
Viewing Pasture
Demonstration
A cow and calf for every acre
and one-half.
Cattlemen in the Blackland
counties of Texas are watching
with interest a 3-y.ear demon-
stration in North Teaxs designat-
ed to determine if a cow and her
calf can be economcially main-
tained on 1% acres of highly
fertilized pasture.
The Blackland Income 'Growth
beef cattle grazing and manage-
ment demonstration was started
in 1965 on the Ben McDonald
farm near Justin in Denton
County.
The project is co - sponsored
by the banks of Denton County,
Harpool Fertilizer Company,
County Agent Al Petty and Tex-
as Power and Light Company.
3.1.G. guidelines are followed on
the demonstration in an effort
to reach the beef cattle goal of
600 pounds of beef per acre.
Economics—is the reason for
the test. Faced with rising land
cost, labor shortages and other
problems, cattlemen are looking
for new and better ways to pro-
duce beef economically.
A gross income of $66.54 per
acre was returned' from the 26-
acre McDonald test plot during
the six-month period' from
April to October, 1966. This fig-

ure represents the income after
fertilizer costs and haying ex-
penses were deducted. The plot
contains 20 acres of Coastal Ber-
muda and six acres of Common
Bermuda and native grasses.
Twenty-three head of registered
Polled Herefords cows and a bull
comprise the test herd. The bull
runs with the cows from Jan-
uary through April and is then
separated. All calves are born in
the fall. The 20 acres of coastal
are d’evided by an electric fence
so that one side can be grazed
while the other produces hay.
The sides are cut alternately.
Sixty-one tons of hay were out
from the area in 1966.
Total income from the area
April-to-October amounted to
$2,577.60. Six hundred and
eighty-on ; dollars worth of hay
was sold and 37 tons—valued at
9925—were stored for winter
feeding. The calves gained 3,-
470 pound's valued at 28c per
pound for an income of $971.60.
Fertilizer cost and the expen-
se of hay 'harvest and handling
bottled $842.10.
Totaled gross income for the
test plot was $1,735.50.
CHARMING CHARMER of snakes is Eleanor Deacon,
attractive St. Petersburg, Fla., housewife who had never
touched a reptile until she was asked to fill in as an
animal handler at the Science Center. Now she’s den
mother for the Center’s snake population and is shown
here feeding one of her charges while an interested stu-
dent looks on.

Soil tests at the beginning of
the demonstration showed high
potassium, medium, phosphorus
and medium organic matter.
Phosphorus and nitrogen were
applied in 1965. The level of
phosphorus was increased so
that the 1966 soil test showed’

total of 180 pounds of nitrogen
was applied per acre in 1 9 6 6

Strict management practices
are followed on the herd at all
times. A compiere parasite and
disease control program is used
