When Spring Brings a Vital Pro ject
Our community is extremely fortunate
to have an active unit of the American
Cancer Society—which is brought to mind
as we note that the 1967 crusade will be
held in April.
As in the past, there will be calls for
volunteer workers, for the unit would like
to make as complete a campaign as possi-
ble in this most worthy cause.
. As you perhaps know, Walter Cook is
Blood Donors
(Continued From Pave 1) — Tir
unit president of the East Ellis County Unit;
Raymond Caldwell is campaign chairman,
and Willie Minor is crusade chairman.
Thus, most assuredly, fine leadership is
already provided.
So it is hoped, when the time comes, all
called upon to work in the 1967 movement
will do so willingly and energetically—and
that the response from the public will be
in keeping with the importance of this great
humanitarian movement.

Jearborn
transplant is Kay’s only hope
for a truly normal life.
“One of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Kilgore of 2719
Linhaven Drive, will be the do-
nor of Kay’s new kidney. The
final choice between them must
await exhaustive analysis of
her blood by scientists at Duke
University.
“Both of Kay’s own kidneys
died a sudden death last April.
“I just caught a cold and all
of a sudden they had to rush
me to the hospital,” she recalls
calmly. “I almost died."
And that was only the first
of many times. In the past 10
months, Kay has spent 130 days
in hospitals and undergone sur-
gery three times. Death has
never been far away.”

COMMISSIONER of the newly formed American Basketball
Association is the former Mr. Basketball, George Mikan, right.
Mikan, with league president Gary Davidson, was the most
prolific scorer in pro basketball history during his heyday

The Merry-Go-Round
WIAISIHINIGTON. Feb. 6.—Hav-
ing stripped the Harlem globe-
trotter—Adam Clayton Powell—
of his committee power, and
having rebuffed Dixiecrat John
B. Williams of Mississippi on
restoration of seniority because
of his disloyalty—the House
turned around last week and
penalized one of the most loyal
and senior Congressmen—
Wright Patman of Texarkana.
The contrast ‘between Patman,
Powell and Williams is interest-
ing.
Powell has a flagrant absentee
record, is one of the outstanding
ing Congressional junketeers
Board for hiking rates.
BANKERS’ SPOKESMAN
For this he has incurred the
wrathy opposition of the No. 1
sploikiesimian of the . bankers’ lob-
by—Rep. "Lud" Ashley, the To-
ledo Democrat and also a mem-
ber of the Banking and Currency
Committee.
Ashley is a debonair and de-
lightful young man who came to
Washington 12 years ago as an
obscure Democrat. One of the
first things he did was to
throw out his wife, who was put
in the position of telephoning:
the Congressman’s friends to
ask for help. Ashley continued'
his gay way, has become quite a
man about town and the darling
of the big bankers.

“Terror in a
consistently voted against the.
policies of Democratic Presi-
dents Truman, Kennedy and
Johnson.
Patman—in cnortast, gets to
work every morning between
5:30 and 6 a.m., works all d a y
Saturday, has never missed a
roll call except for illness, never
takes a trip anywhere while
Congress is in session, doesn’t
junket abroad even when Con-
gress is out of session, supports
the administration on almost ev-
ery vote.
Furthermore, Patmian is t h e
third oldest Congressman i n
point of service—with 38 years
in the House.
However—he has committed
one cardinal sin as chairman of
the House Banking and Curren-
cy Committee. He wants to in-
vestigate the big bankers. He hias
also criticized high interest rat-:
es land the Federal Reserve
John Holton and Jim Smith, lob-
byists for the American. Bank-
ing Assn., are Ashley’s pals.
Alt the last session of C o n-
gress, Ashley tangled with
Chairman Patman of the Bank-
ing and Currency committee in
trying to scuttle an investigation
of the big bankers, and with the
new Congress he began early to
do same. Elven before the first
meeting of the House Banking
and Currency Committee, word
got around that Ashley was go-
ing to clip' Patman’s wings in
the same way Adam Clayton
Powell’s wings were first clipped
over the right to hire staff mem-
bers. The word was that Ashley
had all 14 Republican commit-
tee members in his pocket.
IN ASHLEY’S POCKET
Not many Demorcrats are ab-
le to control Republican Con-
gressmen—so I called up sev-
eral Republicans. Rep. Chester
Mize of Kansas indignantly pro-
tested that he was not in Ash-
ley’s pocket—though he said he
had recently returned from a
trip through Eastern Europe
with Ashley and that they were
friends.
Rep. William: Stanton of Ohio,
another Republican whom I cal-
led ,also denied that he was in
Ashley’s pocket or that Ashley
could control his vote.
Nevertheless—when the vote
was taken at the first session of
the Banking Committee on re-
moving Chairman Patman’s pow-
er to create a special sulblcom-
mittees — all the Republicans
lined up with Ashley—appar-
ently in his pocket.
Another congressman I called
was Rep. William Moorhead of
Pittsburgh, a Democrat, also re-
ported' to be in Ashley’s pocket.
During the last session, Moor-
head, though he professes to be
a liberal, lined up on every vote
with Ashley for the bankers and
against the liberal policies of
Wright Paxman. Moorheads
father once represented the
Frick coal interests of Pitts-
burg; and Helen Frick, a strong
supporter of Richard Nixon —
sent Moorhead a contribution 'of ’
$1,000 when he first ran f 6 r
■ Cl onigress. ’
When I asked him if he was
in Ashley's pocket—Moorhead
protested vigorously. But when I
asked him whether he was going
to vote with Ashley on the or-
ganization of the Banking and
Currency Commlittee, he squirm-
ed, alibied, hesitated’—and made
it all too clear that he was i n
fact in Ashlee's pocket. .
