THE BIBLE
Solid Ground
Coach Donnie Lawrence to
speak in Giddings Sunday
By observing and listening
many truths are revealed
Have you ever looked out the
window on a day when it was
overcast and the clouds were
hanging low and there were no
leaves on the tree? The wind
whistles around the windows and it
looks like it's very cold outside
But when you step outside, it turns
out that it’s really a windy but balmy
day It isn't cold at all It only looked
that way from inside
This same thing can happen with
people They aren't always the way
they seem to be But we take one
glance at someone and we think we
know what that person is really like
Could we have been fooled and
sould we make such a rash judgment
about someone?
Some people may brag about their
accomplishments and seem full of
self-confidence when they really feel
inadequate They may boast about
their possessions when they really
feel that they have less than others.
Also, someone may criticize or
make fun of you when they secretly
wish they were like you This is just
their way of trying to make
themselv es feel better and is a sign
of insecurity
James was inspired to write
"Each of you must be quick to listen,
slow to speak, and slow to be angry"
(James! 19).
If we would follow the admonition
of James and be "quick to listen,
slow to speak, and slow to anger."
we would be better able to discern
the real person hiding underneath all
the insecurity in people that comes
across in unloving w ays
Maybe we would be able to see
that someone who seems cold and
appears to have everything under
control really wants us to reach out
to touch them with our love and
warmth and compassion
Instead of getting upset with these
people because they are rubbing us
the wrong way, we need to learn to
respond carefully rather than just
reacting Then we can hear the cries
for help coming from them and be
able to respond in ways that will give
them what they so desperately need
What greater gift or talent could
we have than to be able to see the
mental and spiritual needs of those
around us Since most people aren't
going to ask us for help or don't
realize what they really need to
make their life more joyful and
peaceful, the only way they are
going to get the help they need is if
someone else can get through to
them and help them in a round-about
way.
This is a way for us to truly show
our love for God our Father and
Jesus Christ our Saviour, who has
changed our life and given us hope
and joy
In I John 4:7 we read, "Dear
friends, let us love one another,
because love comes from God.
Whoever loves is a child of God and
knows God."
We can get on this path of loving
others by letting our lives shine in
the world so that everyone can see
how happy and satisfied we are And
in so doing we will be lighting the
way for others.
Then as God gives us the wisdom
to discern the needs of others, we
can begin to help people who are
crying out for help - but aren't
getting it because their cry is so
disguised that hardly anyone even
notices it
But if we are quick to listen and to
observe their actions, we can be
ready to reach out to help
