Chief Engineer Geo. 8. Bruce of the
Texarkana & Ft. Smith railway is in
the city today. While here it is said
Mr. Bruce will undertake the work of
-urveying the line of the Gate City

its present terminus in the direction
of Bright S»»r Ark. If correct this
news will certainly prove acceptable
to the people of that sectien.
The prospects for better times a
more plentiful supply of money and
increased irnde for this year over last
in all of the Southern States are in-
disputably good. This applies to
Arkansas with ns much appearance
of cer ainty as to any other one ot
the States. Nor dors the brighter
outlook end here for our state that
greatest of all developers extensive
railway construction for once i-
making Arkansas a decided favorite.
There are already more miles ot
railway construction projected with
in the borders ot this State than up-
on the same area of country in any
other portion of the United States.
Better still each and every one of the
projects are strictly legitimate and
founded ou substantial basis.

An Urgent Appeal.
Ou the 14th of December last the
board of directors of the Youug Men’s
Christian Association issued a circu-
lar letter to the people of Texarkana
setting forth the work of the Associa-
tion and appealing for funds stating
that during the four years of its ex-
istence it bad acquired an indebted-
ness of $1250 and also stating that
unless this amount was secured the
institution must close its doors. Last
Saturday a small company of citizens
and friends not exceeding fifteen in
number assembled at the rooms and
fr<un that number $585 was pledged
to wipe out this debt. A committee
was appointed to canvass the city for
the balance this week and from day
to day the results of their work will
be published. Let it be understood
that this is a critical period in the his-
tory of the Association and unless
this amount can be secured this week
the iu’dluliou must close its doors.
Let the puhlic spirited men and friends
of tlie Association prepare to contrib-
ute towards saving it.
Respectfully submitted
Board of Directors.

COMPULBARY ATTENDANCE.
How and by Whom the Democratic 1
Quorum was Seeured.
When congress convened at noon
on Monday the chances appeared that
even the stringent measures adopted
by that body to secure au attendance
of its recalcitrant members would
prove ineffectual and tbe four days
deadlock of the past week loomed up
omiiiously before the disheartened
gaze of the faithful band of tried and
true Democratic tariff reformers
threatening ouce more to enfold the
House in merciless embrace. But a
few moments of time after the gavel
of the speaker fell and before the roll
call had fairly begun served to com-
pletely change the appearance of
things and as crowd after crowd filed
iuto the chamber and quietly drop-
ped into their heretofore vacant seat I
it quicklv became apparent that the 1
sergeant at arms and bis deputies had
succeeded beyond doubt iu bringing
back to Washington and into the
House under warrants of arrest a
sufficient number of congressional
absentees to tn ike up the greatly de-
sired quorum.
There was also a better attendance
in the galleries than on any day since
lhe reconvening after the holiday re-
cess aud the floor of the house fairly
swarmed with members. The roll
call developed the presence of a quor-
um. One hundred and seventy nine
members voted on tbe first roll call.
The names and residences of these
ireutlemeu who were thus brought iu
“vi el armis” to serve their country
"at so much per diem” and compelled
by the laws of lhe House to perform
their sworu duty were as follows:
Brown Indiana; Cadmus (Dem.)
New Jersey; Fielder (Dem.) New-
Jersey; Gessenbeiner (Dem.) New

Burr (Dem.). North Carolina; Childs
