For investment by persons who have already purchased the maximum amount of
Savings Bonds permitted this year, and who desire current income on a bond salable in
the market, there are the following:
2% Treasury Bonds of 1950-52 for a "secondary" cash reserve, and
21/2%. Treasury Bonds of 1964-69, for a long term, marketable security.
(3) PLAN YOUR WORK
Keep in mind that the period of the drive is of brief duration.
You will conserve time and energy if you arrange your calls so as to avoid doubling
back and forth in covering your territory.
Set a goal for yourself. Divide your prospect list into the requisite number of
cards per day and plan to finish the job'in the first ten days of the drive. That will
leave the balance of the period for follow-up and second calls.
Start making calls immediately. Good salesmen know there is a direct relation-
ship between the number of calls and the volume of sales.
(4) YOUR PROSPECTS
The objective of this campaign is to reach every American citizen who has funds
to lend the United States by buying Government securities. This is essentially a
"people's war" and everyone, man or woman, having or controlling funds for investment,
must do his share.
Your potential buyers include wage earners, the small investor along with the
well-to-do, large corporations and small businesses, labor unions, State and local Govern-
ments, insurance companies-life, casualty and fire-benevolent groups, endowed institu-
tions, universities, colleges, hospitals, trust funds, societies, schools, fraternal orders, founda-
tions, farmers and merchants, clergymen, dentists, doctors, lawyers and other profes-
sional men.
A little effort and systematic listing will uncover many other prospects who can be
encouraged to lend their money to the Government for carrying on the war.
The ability to lend is present. Since the December Drive, deposits in the banks
have increased considerably. New earning power due to war industries has bettered the
fortunes of many a household and the resources of those families, as measured by
the,weekly pay -envelopes of one or several wage earners in each home, are greater than
they ever were before. This new money in the hands of persons benefiting from increased
war activity, constitutes an investment pool that has not yet been tapped adequately.
These citizens should be reached. It is among this group that a large amount of
potential lending power is now concentrated.
(5) SEE YOUR PROSPECT IN PERSON
Use the telephone primarily for making appointments! A personal visit is the best way
to get results. There is no substitute for a face-to-face interview.
Prospect cards are important in properly organizing your work. However, they may
or may not be furnished you from headquarters. If necessary, make up a list of prospects1

nof your own in the territory assigned to you. Even though you may be supplied with
special prospect cards, there will be opportunity for you to build them up as you go along.
It is a good rule never to leave a house or office without finding out if there is anyone
else you ought to see.
Remember-time is short. Do not put off your calls, or the entire drive will lag.
(6) YOUR APPEAL TO INDIVIDUALS
In presenting yourself to the prospect, it is important that you invite his full attention.
Therefore, it is well to present your message to him in the most personal way you can.
Why should the prospect invest in United States Government Bonds?
The first and dominating motive is the patriotic desire to back up the
American men on the fighting fronts. They are protecting us with their lives;
it is part of our civilian job to protect them with our money.
Investing in United States Government Bonds is the effective way for us to do
our share on the home front. You will find that many of your prospects have sons,
relatives, or friends in the service, and the appeal to them takes on a deeper
significance.
The second important motive is the fact that possession of a United
States Goverment Bond gives the prospect a "sense of being a full partner"
in the national effort to achieve Victory in this war. Through maximum pur-
chase of Government Bonds, your prospect will have the satisfaction of doing his
share.
Moreover-and aside from patriotic motives-there is no safer bond
than a United States Government Bond.
Checking the Rising Cost of Living
But there is further an economic reason why. the prospect should invest in United
States Government Bonds: Each bond bought by an individual with money saved
as a result of curtailed spending plays its part in checking inflation. This is why:
As a result of huge war expenditures, the income of the people of the country-the
total of what they will receive in wages, salaries, farm income, dividends, etc., now is the
highest in history. Even after payment of heavy income taxes, there will be more dollars
to spend at a time when the amount of goods available is declining because of the
demands of war production.
If people should try to spend this excess purchasing power, the upward pressure
on prices would be serious. Money would buy less, and that's what is meant by
inflation. Inflation has been aptly referred to as "dangerous dollars in our pockets."
Every dollar saved by postponing personal spending now and invested in United
States Government Bonds does double duty. It not only provides funds urgently needed
for war, but checks the tendency toward rising prices.
