Are DefinedThe camp government, for those President:
of you who have often asked, is Andy Berry......708composed of six representatives,
one from each block, comprising
the council. They, and the camp
president meet often, and both
have worked hard and long.
Created by them is the cabinet
consisting of Commissioners of
Beefs, Publicity, Treasury, Enter-
tainment, and Athletics.
The council has been influential
in getting lower prices at the
fountain, having a mail box placed
in the mess hall, starting this
newspaper, and in securing a con-
stitution which gives the council
power to plan any activities for
the camp, subject to the veto of
management, stipulated by the
condition that an answer is given
within five days.

Shangri-la
Out from the busy city of Ho-
nolul'i, along driveways with
great trees, past small lakes and
large well-groomed g a r d e n s -
that's the approach to the iso-
lated Paradise, Area 3, Contrac-
tors Hotel.
There are no towering struc-
tures here; instead, row after
roW of two-story buildings with
wide spacious lawns, pleasingly
meet the eye. Every building,
whether it be mess hail or resi-
dence, opens to exquisite, varied,
and brea h-taking views.
But there is no view quite so
beautiful anywhere on the
grounds as that from the mess
hall looking down a row of tables
laden with "goony" bird.
While the hotel is not a per-
manent residence, the men love
to call it home, although some
thought has been given to call-
ing it "Little Texas."
Unlike most quarters for men'
it is a self-contained commun-
ity, having its own fire depart-
ment, also a well trained police
force. Its Camp Council is the
main pride. Each block has a
representative. Then there is a
theater and a canteen, where
you can buy anything from shoe-
strings to hair oil, or an ice
cream sundae, providing y o u
have the price.
There is a spirit of friendli-
ness around the hotel, the "hel-
lo" custom prevails for all with-
in its boundaries. (Hello sucker.)
Perhaps the most outstanding
feature of all is the hotel's rec-
reation center. Here many of the
men find rest and relaxation by
enjoying a hand of bridge or per-
haps a game of billiards.
On rainy days the men revert
to their childhood, and can be
seen here and there wading in
small pools that form in the lower
terrain.
You will find that they all
agree that this cantonment is a
Shangri-La, the real "Paradise
of the Pacific."
