A school drop-out mistake has a lot of
headaches.
We’ve just read part of a taped inter-
view with Jack Wolk that is convincing, in
regard to what we’ve believed a fact: "You
hear it a million times. ‘You can’t get a
good job without a good education.’ But
you don’t realize how true that is until
you make the rounds. I did. 8 hours a day.
5 days a week. For 6 lousy months. With-
out an education, they don’t- even want to
talk to you. Lucky for me, there are all sorts
of programs to help kids get more training.
finish high school first by going nights,
because the courses in the program are
college courses. And, what with working
days, it wasn’t easy. But it’s better than
making peanuts all the rest of your life.”
Secretary of Labor Wirtz is right when
he says, “Young people are committing
economic suicide if they don’t receive all
the education and training they possibly
can." . . . And he adds: “The Nation will
be the beneficiary.” ... Think it over, young
people!

Congress Paying
Lincoln Honor
WASHINGTON— The Senate
and House met only for a few
minutes today, since Congress
is on a week-long Lincoln Day
holiday. The token sessions were
held because the Constitution
says Congress can not recess
for more than three days with-
out a joint resolution.
In President Lincoln’s home-
town of Springfield, Illinois,
veterans and other groups paid
homage to him on the 159th an-
niversary of his birth. Lincoln’s
tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery at-
tracted most of the visitors.

are disliked, sometimes hated—

If a plebiscite were taken to-
day as to whether the US
should remain in the country it
is supposted to save—a majority
would probably vote “Yankee

This, incidentally, was a sug-
gestion advanced by former
Under Secretary of State Geo.
Ball as a logical excuse for with-
drawing from South Vietnam.
We could simly comply with the
South Vietnamese people's re-
quest to leave.
NOTE—One failure of Amer-
ican officials in Saigon is that
of not cultivating South Vietna-
mese civilian, leaders. We have
concentrated on the military-
and they are not loved in their
own country.
KOREA VS. VIETNAM
There can be no question a-
■ bout the connection between e-
vents in North Korea and events
in South Vietnam. You need on-
ly read the speeches of North
Korean leaders urging diver-
sionary tactics against the U S
to relieve pressure on North
Vietnam to understand this.
More important, you should
read the speeches of former
President Eisenhower, John
Foster Dulles and the former
Seantor from Texas—Lyndon B.
Johnson. On the day the Korean
truce was signed by the Eisen-
hower administration—July 27,
1953—Sen. Lyndon B.. Johnson
were right. The pressure on
what was then French Indo-
China was stepped up shortly
after the Korean truce was sign-
ed. Eisenhower himself warned
of this in his speech before the
Governors’ Conference in Seat-
tle in the summer of 1953.
President Syngman R'hee of
South Korea remarked: “I have
opposed the signing of the truce
.because of my conviction that it
will prove to be the prelude to
more war, not less; to more
and ruin; to further communist
advances by war and by subver-
Harry Truman, then out of of-
fice, remarked: “I could have
negotiated the same kind of
truce Eisenhower got—at any
time during the past two
' years."
