Tie Moline Menace
by Bob Altenloh

THE WORLD TODAY...
“Imperialists!” they call us
in smaller countries around
the globe. The storming
flag-burning Iranians have
been the loudest, indicating
by their behavior that they
fear us. Mostly illiterate and
Xenophobic peoples strol-
ling on the main streets of
these countries see huge
windowless structures going
up with mysterious symbols
on the front as, IBM,
BANK, or GM. Their
hidden thoughts are “They
are taking us over!” by the
imagined insidiousness of
our alien presence.
‘‘Imperialism” is not
necessarily a bad word. It
described a political process
that occurs when a larger
country after developing
trade with a smaller one (or
an island) gave it “protec-
tion” from other large
countries. A mother country
with colonies became an
Empire, one that protected
and began to rule the
colony.
Athens defended the
smaller Greek states and
these in turn paid tribute.
The idea is not new.
Today these colonies, one
after another, being more
educated resist rule and we
see them gaining independ-
ence. (Africa now has 52
countries). Considerable
hope lies in their belief in
the UN for protection..
The United States today

indulges in the direct oppo-
site of imperialism! We give
Bolivia, for example,
535,000,000 a year for
military and economic aid to
protect us! We practice this
with 82 countries. Instead of
giving tribute in return,
they protect us from Russia.
Blackmail? Perhaps. We
should know that they know
that if they join Russia’s
. team, little men with brief-
cases will arrive from
Moscow and outline how
things are to be done.
France lost heavily in
trying to hold her colonies,
particularly Algeria. The
French believed what their
economists told them about
ECONOMIC DETERMI-
NISM. That trade and
business holdings would
hold the colony. It failed as
always, and France began
military efforts. In 1920 they
tried to hold Syria, killing
20,000 in Damascus. From
1925 until 1927 more thous-
ands in Morocco were
killed. After 1943 more in
Morocco and then Madaga-
sear. Nine years in Indo-
China (Viet Nam) ended in
their defeat at Dien Bien
Phu.
There are now three pos-
sible futures for the world
in general. Russia’s satel-
lites, which she is gathering
may one day struggle for in-
dependence. Like France’s
greatest mistake, Russia
might be drained dry by im-
possibly huge military costs
in an attempt to hold them.
Or, the United States and
Russia may each accumulate
satellites (colonies) until
there are only two remain-
ing powers. (If we beef up
China; three). This might
lead to an all-out final war,
of such destruction that
even the victor would be a
- loser, t
Toynbee in his histories
lists 25 countries that went
this route. The beginning
cause of such a holocaust
would not be the Usual
territorial imperative or
material gain. Instead a
national feeling, a BELIEF,
would set it off. It would be
the belief that “We as a
major power, can take the
other one.” To prevent this
a new politico-psychological
“peacefare” doctrine must
come about. Each major
power’s leaders must ma-
nipulate their own people by
convincing them that they
cannot take over the other
power and its allies, appeas-
ing national unrest with
statements as - “We’re not
ready.”
To save their own skins
the leaders quite naturally
will secretly keep the keys.
The “H” bomb is keeping
the peace now and just may
do so for us in the future. -
