allows launches into most of the
commercial orbits, with improved
payload/fuel ratios for the spacecraft.
From near the center of the
235,000-acre Kenedy Ranch, vehicles
would take off over sparsely
populated areas and water, thus
reducing the risk of property damage
and injury to humans.
- The terrain is flat and the weather
is consistently clear. There are no
conflicting land uses and relatively
little air traffic. Access to both US
Highway 77 and the Gulf Intracoastal
Waterway will provide supplies
during the facility construction and
launch vehicle assembly process.
The urban areas to the north and
• south offer extensive industrial and
commercial infrastructure.
A preliminary environmental
evaluation of the site was conducted
by Chiner Moseley & Associates, Inc.
No fatal flaws were found. It appears
the site can satisfy all expected
environmental, safety and operational
criteria.

A Pou might have had a lousy
W Monday this week, but at
I least you weren’t in a
• footrace with a coyote.
That’s what happened to city staff
members Joe Flores and Leo Villarreal.
As they began their workday, “We
saw this coyote tearing across Texas
Avenue at Sixth Street, heading east,”
Joe says, “so we followed.”
The animal ended up at the school
district’s bus barn, “and we were
concerned about it getting on the
Graham campus,” Joe says. He and
• Leo, after a good deal of exertion and
probably a little bit of yelling, finally
got the beast corralled in a storage
room, saving hundreds of fifth and
sixth graders from harm and the
distractions the chase would
undoubtedly have brought.
“It wasn’t exactly in our
description of duties,” Joe says, “but
it had to be dealt with.”
We understand Animal Control
Officer Rudy Cruz contributed some
top-notch advice during the incident,
as well.

ne of the neatest things
about working at a
newspaper is (yeah,
we’ve told you this before) the volume
of information, some neat (see above),
some worthless (see our trash), that
comes in the mail.
We don’t ask for it. It just comes,
and comes, and keeps on coming.
People like the state’s Attorney
General send all sorts of tidbits.
Among the more recent offerings
from his office is this up-to-date list
of the top 10 most popular vehicles -
popular that is, to car thieves.
Those favorites are, in
descending order, GM pickups, Ford
pickups, Honda Accords, GM
Suburbans, Toyota Camrys, Olds
Cutlasses, Dodge pickups, Olds ’98s,
GM Vans and Ford Mustangs.
And the AG tells us that Hidalgo
County has the sixth highest rate in
the state for auto theft. Strangely
enough, we have always been more
concerned about getting ripped off
when we visited a mall in Cameron
County. And Cameron’s not even in
the top 10.
Here’s some good news, though:
the top five counties - Bexar, Dallas,
Harris, Tarrant and Travis — account
for 70 percent of the auto thefts in the
state.
We’ve pretty much avoided that
worry by driving hand-me-down
vehicles that are usually so dirty that
they would be totally unattractive to
a car thief.
