We cannot lose our doctors!
As a US Army and Army Air Corps T/Sgt. and a medical and surgical
technician, Alberto Arteaga, Sr. learned first-hand the value of good physi-
cian. Four years in England and France, and service with more than eight
different doctors and surgeons, and dozens of nurses, during World War II,
was enough to make Mr. Arteaga appreciate those who work in the health
care professions. “As a resident of the Rio Grande Valley, I am worried
about losing our doctors,” says the veteran. “All this talk about walk-outs
brought on by exorbitant insurance premiums makes me really concerned.
It’s in the best interest of all of us if we work to stop lawsuit abuse. But I
want all of us to remember that our Lord Jesus is always at the side of our
doctors, and all other professionals. We must keep our faith. And we must
continue to pray.”
Applications are being taken for
just one more week for the Annual
Roy Gonzales/Esmeralda Perez
Memorial Scholarship, given each
year by the Mercedes High School
Class of 1976.
To apply, Mercedes candidates
for graduation from high school
should send a typed resume, listing
grade average, record of community
service, list of scholastic honors and
a description of future plans and
intentions of future community
service.
Alternatively, the required
information could be provided in the
form of a typewritten essay.
Applications should be delivered
to the office of The Mercedes
Enterprise, 230 South Texas in
Mercedes, or mailed to P.O. Box 657,
Mercedes, 78570.
Deadline for applying is 5 p.m.,
May 24.
The scholarship was first
established by the family of the late
Roy Gonzales, a Class of 1976
graduate, who devoted the last years
of his life to AIDS education. It was
later expanded to memorialize his
fellow class member Esmeralda Perez,
who succumbed to breast cancer
after a life of fighting energetically for
human rights and human dignity.
More information can be obtained
from high school senior class
counselors.

THE PROPER
USE OF WORDS
I read an article recently that
included a report of a study
which said that in the average
home and school, for every posi-
tive statement a child hears, he
hears from seven to ten negative
statements. Whether or not the
statistics are correct, I think we
all can verify from personal ex-
perience the power of words to
lift and encourage or to put down
and hurt.
The study also said that it
takes several positive statements
to overcome the effect of one
negative word. The Bible says,
‘Reckless words pierce like a
sword, but the tongue of the wise
brings healing” (Proverbs
12:18). “Death and life are in
the power of the tongue (Prov-
erbs 18:21) and, lips that speak
knowledge are a rare jewel”
(Proverbs 20:15b).
Here is a verse from the New
Testament that if we would put
into practice and never violate,
would resolve a large percentage
of the problems we have in our
homes, churches and
community. “Let no unwhole-
some talk come out of your
mouths, but only what is helpful
for building others up according
to their needs, that it may ben-
efit those who listen”
(Ephesians 4:29).
Heavenly Father -1 know my
tongue is capable of
either blessing or cursing. Guard
my words today so I may be part
of your construction crew instead
of a member of Satan’s wreck-
ing crew.
