member of Sunny & The Sunglows,
the first Hispanic musical group who
performed to both English and Span-
ish speaking audiences. The music of
Sunny &
The Sunglows was a mixture of
Mexican and American culture. Leav-
ing the Sunglows, Rudy worked with
the Sunliner Band, a spin-off The
Sunglows. After several years, he
decided to form his own group, ‘The
Latin Breed Band.“
Rudy’s mom, who at 41 years of
age had come into a salvation experi-
ence, had been praying for her sons.
Her prayers were answered in 1974.
As Rudy toured Florida, he had an
experience that would change not
only his life, but the lives of select
members of the group. As he went
about the business of music, he made
his peace with God, accepting Jesus
Christ as his Savior. Other members
of the group also made a commitment
of faith, receiving the Lord.
Shortly after he was saved, Rudy
was called into the ministry of spread-
ing God’s Word through Preaching,
Teaching and the Gift of Music. He
pastored Potters House Church in
Seguin, Texas from 1974 - 1986, and
since then has traveled in Canada, the
United States, Mexico, and Central
and South America with God's mes-
sage of Salvation to the lost, healing
| and deliverence to the sick and de-
pressed, hope to the hopeless, and
encouragement to Christians in their
daily walk with Christ.
The public is cordially invited to
attend these meetings. The Christian
Church is located at the corner of
Texas and Sixth Streets. Nursery care
will be provided. For more informa-

Souper bowl of caring slated Febuary 6
On February 6, 2005, millions will
celebrate Super Bowl Sunday. That
same day, another group of heroes
will be going about their work of ful-
filling a special commitment. These
heroes are young people who will
participate in a “Souper Bowl of Car-
ing”.
It all began, with a simple prayer, .
“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super -
bowl of soup to eat.” That prayer, 15
years ago, inspired a small local
church youth group in South Caro-
lina to do something for the poor in
their community. They thought of
how much good could be done if each
person in church that Sunday would
give just one dollar to help the hun-
gry.

H-E-B today launches a six-month
search for Texas’ finest educators. For
the first time since its inception in
2002, the H-E-B Excellence in Educa-
tion Awards will not only honor teach-
ers and principals but school districts
as well. With more than $500,000 in
cash and grants, this is the largest
monetary awards program for educa- ′
tors in the state.
“There is a job around that calls
for more intelligence, creativity, dis-
cipline, commitment, responsibility,
and heart than educating our chil-
dren,” Kate Rogers, H-E-B Centennial
Celebration project director, said.
“Great teachers, principals and
schools not only influence and shape
lives - they change them.”
This year, H-E-B worked with the
Texas Association of School Admin-
istrators (TASA), the Texas Elemen-
tary Principals and Supervisors As-
sociation (TEPSA) and the Texas
Association of Secondary School
Principals (TASSP) to expand the pro-
gram to include school districts. To
commemorate H-E-B’s 100th Anniver-
sary, one lucky school district will re-
ceive a $100,000 cash prize.
Five regional panels comprised of
educators, administrators and com-
munity leaders will judge the entrants,
selecting a total of 50 finalists - 15
principals, 30 teachers and five school
districts, one district from each of H-
E-B’s five areas of operation.

Teacher Appreciation Week, through

Since then, more than $24 million has
been raised. All money donated on
Super Bowl Sunday goes directly to
local food pantries or soup kitchens.
None is used for administrative ex-
penses. Last year, 12,759 organiza-
tions raised $4,260,531. Several
churches in Mercedes raised a little
over $1200.00 dollars that went to
