TEXARKANA ARKANSAS MONDAY EVENING .IDLY I!) 1«!)7.
SALVATION ARMY.
They "Held the Fort” nt the Park
Yesterday. An Interesting
Program.
The Salvation Army in camp
here held three Interesting meet-
ings yesterday -morning noon and
night. The reporter was present
al two of (lie services morning and
noon and was very much impress-
ed as well as entertained at the en-
thusiasm displayed at these ser-
vices.
Lieutenant Colonel Evans an-
nounced that the morning service
would consist of music and experi-
ence talks as he did not feel like
talking himsell. He said we will
worship Ood with music that sic
did not belong to the devil but
“wailing and gnashing of teeth"
did and there would be none of this
at their meeting.
Several ladles to guitar accom-
paniments rendered some sweet
vocal solos after which a young
man with a banjo gave a vocal solo
the army joinlni'' in the chorus.
The only thing to mar this service
was the fact that these vervlces
were held under the pavlllion near
(he K. C. I’. &O. road and a switch
engine with a dozen or more cars to
switch was galloping up and down
the track every few minutes and
for noise we tire bound to say was
an easy blue ribbon every the army
The collection was taken up as is
usual with all demonstrations and
the captain said when the tanibo-
rlncs were emptied and the con-
tents counted that If some one
would contribute just 'lOcenls more
the total collection would be an
nouncetl. The thirty cents was giv-
en but the reporter had dodged
the collector and In dodging from
tree to tree got out of car shot and
did not catch the amount collected
It was satisfactory though ortho
army would be skirmishing yet for
the amount.
The evening service was a repe-
tition of that of the morning ser-
vice only (he meeting place was
(hanged Io the stage. The amll-
encii was larger and the soldiers
ohlcei's cadets and ensigns entered
Into the service with more vim and
spirit than lit the morning meet
Ing. The collection at this service
amounted to ♦!.45 which was not
satlsfiictory to the captain In
“charge" as he said he must have
♦7.00. lie detailed two of the fe-
male olllcers and sent them out a
second lime and they each got a
dollar before they went In l'he
army halleluiah over this mid the
ciipluln sent them mil again and
three others to help They kept
up soliciting until they came within
11 fewc< ntsof collecting (he amount
when the captain said ahakltig the
amount “tills will do."
Il was then announced that mt
Monday night (tonight) there would
Im sonieliiliig happen In Tex it rl< all it
that never hlippened before it
would be a time when one and one
would make <>iie a wedding that
olllcer llcnnet and Miss Ifllla Asli
cruft both of this city would get
imirrhd and that the army propos-
ed to have 11 hiillclu|iili lime ovei
the affair. The price of ndiiiLslou
would be 5 cents and ho hoped the
park would be tilled with well wish-
ing people for the couple. Hevcral
solos Were sung after this lie
fore (he meeting was dismissed.
A large crowd wax out at night
ami an Interesting meeting was
had The services will lust (luring
the present week

bargains. I don’t ask you to “lake «
back your gold” but bring it along with '
your silver or any old thing and I’ll
give you more for it than was ever given
in this town. This is not “only a game

Take the educational advantages.
Look at the dllTeieiice in the
schools now and then. In those
days cliildi'vn went from one to nlx
miles to school while now a school
and also a church stand within a
mile of everybody and so to the
thinking man hard times is the re-
sult of either extravagance or bad
management A desire to have all
the good things O» life Indulge lux-
urious tastes all of which costs
money and returns no Interest on
the Investment. In our opinion to
