The law in this regard should be

The Old Man
She kissed the old man; she
ghoweied tearsand kisses upon him.
She told all the people how good he
was. I thought that if she had
given him two of those kisses per
. quarter for the last ten years how
the tender heart of the old gentle-
. man would have smiled through his
tears. But now he took it all very
coolly. He was dead. He was old
and poor she was young and rich.
She had ten rooms but no room for
father. Yet he had made room
for her when he had only two. The
old man was not. educated. She
was at his expense. He had fed
and clothed her for twenty years at
home and at college until she had
risen in "refined and cultured so-
ciety" and had married among
them. The old man's dress and dia-
lect were too course. She kissed
him In a beautiful coffin. "Dear
father" is to have a costly monu-
ment. A warm kiss while living Is
better than cold marble when dead.

HE PLAYED THE DEVIL.
An Exciting Scene in an Indian
Church Sunday Night
Bourbon Ind. Jan. 19—Rev. Mr.
Akin pastor of the flock of Bethel
church Sunday night took for his
theme "His Satanic Majesty." He is
an eloquent man and he painted the
arch-fiend in vivid colors. At the
climax of the description a being
dressed to represent a devil with
large head and switching tail
ambled up the aisle blowing smoke
from its nostrils and bellowing: “1
am the deyil and I want all of you.”
The audience become panic stricken.
Men women and children were
hurled to the floor and trampled
upon in the mad rush for the door.
In the confusion the stove was
upturned and the building caught
fire’ Before the horrified mem-
bers could regain their senses the
fire had made such headway that
all attempts to save the church
were in vain. This morning George
Akin son of the pastor confessed
that he with the help of other
boys rigged up a devil suit and
knowing the subject of his father s
sermon concealed himself behind a
chair and await the arrival of the
congregation.
Never Baw a Telephone.
A few days since a green looking
man came to the city from Cass
county with a lot of produce and
needing some medicine called upon
our young druggist friend
tried to sell or exchange some very
white butter lor the necessary ar-
ticle. The druggist said he would
go to the telephone and ask his
wife if she needed any. So he
stepped over to the telephone call-
ed her up and talked to her for a
few seconds through the Instru-
ment. Then turning to the coun-
tryman who wa« standing with his
hands In his pockets his eyes dilat-
ed and his face very red he told
him that his wife said she would
not need any butter. The Indig-
nant countryman blurted out:
"Look here mister If you didn’t
want any butter why didn't ye say
so? I ain’t such a fool as to think
that you've got your wife In that
little box"
Double Train Service.
It is seml-olflclally reported th.it
the Pee (lee will soon double Its
passenger service- which Informa-
tion has caused a general "sprue
Ing up" of the railroad boys and
their getting in line for promotion.
Mr. W 11. McDougal who now runs
a freight train on the south end
will doubtless be one of the llrst to
be given a passenger run. | Shreve
1 port Journal
We hope the above road will put
on a double dally service as It will
be a great trade brlngcr to this
city and allow our people to lump
the train In the morning transact
out of town business with many of
the villages near here and return
at night. We believe It would pay
the Pec Gee to put on the train
. ami hope It Is not all talk but a
reality.
