Eagles season ends
with tough 14-7 loss
to Academy Bees
Turnovers, injuries and penal-
ties .. . the terrible trio of mala-
dies that can wreck a football
team, made a sustained appear-
ance at the Goldthwaite Eagles
bi-District game at Clifton last
Friday night.
Academy’s Bumblebees dis-
played a solid running game and
advanced in the Class AA Divi-
sion II playoffs with the 14-7 win
over the Eagles.
Academy will face Ganado Fri-
day night at Giddings in the Area
Round of the playoffs.
It was the Eagles who took the
ball away from Academy on the
first possession of the game.
Michael Jackson intercepted a
pass in the right flat to stop the
Bees at the Eagles 32-yard line.
The Eagles were on the move
when Billy Deeds was stripped of
the ball and the Bees recovered at
the 31-yard line. A big pass play
to Lanny Gore picked up 29 yards
on this drive.
A couple of incomplete passes
and a holding penalty thwarted
the Bees on the ensuing drive and
they were forced to punt. The
Eagles took over on their own 37-
yard line.
Jackson picked up five on a
short pass play and then Rocky
Miller blasted over right tackle
for 17. Miller hit on the counter
tray play over right tackle for
another 20 as he was dragged
down from behind by the Bees at
the Academy 24-yard line.
Short runs by Deeds, Britt
Berry and Miller moved the
chains to the Academy 11-yard
line. Miller hit over right tackle
for six yards and then a pass
intended for Corey Miles in the
end zone was tipped and finally
intercepted by the Bees for a
touchback, stopping the Eagles
cold.
Two plays later starting quar-
terback Greg Proffitt left the game
with a broken right arm and
Deeds took over at the helm.
Academy put together a nice
80-yard drive for the game’s first
score, all on the ground. A quar-
terback sneak covered the last
yard and it was 7-0 with 2:48 to go
in the second quarter.
Chase Plagens made about 22
yards on the kickoff return, and
almost broke it. The Eagles

Goldthwaite musicians fare
well at District competition
By: Susan Reynolds
GHS Band Director
Last Saturday, three middle
school students and six high
school students competed in the
All-District Band Competition
at Glen Rose. In band
competition such as this, school
size is not a consideration. Our
students compete with other
students from 2A schools as well
as IA and 3A schools for a fixed
number of chairs in the All-
District Band. Some of the
schools represented on Saturday
were Goldthwaite, Glen Rose,
Alvarado, Hamilton, Dublin and
twelve others.
The middle school students
had their competition last week
and performed their concerts
this week. Those participating
were Anna Johnson, 7th chair
clarinet in the Symphonic Band;
Daniel Foster, 4th chair French
Horn in the Concert Band; and
Jaron Covey, 6th chair in the
Concert Band.
The high school students who
auditioned were Connie Major
and Tabatha Coronado on flute;
Alicia Johnson and Keena
Hilliard on clarinet; Jennifer
Taylor on tenor sax; and Ryan
Kramer on tuba. Alicia Johnson
earned 13th chair in the band,
Ryan Kramer placed 4th chair,
and Jennifer Taylor go second
alternate.
Mrs. Reynolds said, "The
concerts this year were the best
I've heard at the district level.
It's a long day when you audition
in the morning, put a concert
together in four hours and
perform that evening. It was a
very rewarding day, though.
Even for the kids who did not get
in the band. They attacked a lot
of very difficult music just to do
the audition, learned about
playing under a great deal of
pressure and heard excellent
concerts. Our town should be
very proud of it's local musicians.
Tell them so, too. They need to
hear it."
