Eagles come from behind to
defeat DeLeon 22-19 before
big Homecoming crowd
Team is open this week
Long-time rival DeLeon came to Eagle Field last Friday
night to try to spoil the 2003 Homecoming game of the
Goldthwaite Eagles. If it were not for the tenacity of the
Eagles in coming back from a deficit on two occasions they
would have succeeded. Instead the Bearcats went home with
a 22-19 loss and the Eagles delighted the huge crowd that
witnessed the victory.
A holding penalty stopped the Bearcats first drive and the
Eagles started on their first possession on their own 20 yard
line. On the first play from scrimmage the Eagles’ Josh Mejia
hit off left end and was brought down after a 38 yard gain. As
fate would have it, this time a holding penalty against the
Eagles seemed to have a big impact on the drive and the
Eagles punted.
A big hit by Chuck Horton caused the ball to pop out and
Nolan Wagner recovered the fumble for the Eagles. Again,
the Eagles had trouble maintaining their power and the team
punted the ball back to the Bearcats. DeLeon took over on

Eagles senior halfback John Hale lined up in the slot on the left side and was on the
receiving end of a Jake Proffitt pass in the game here Friday night against the
DeLeon Bearcats. The Eagles managed to come from behind two times and emerge
with a 22-19 Homecoming victory. The varsity Eagles have an open date this week
and will have extra time to prepare for the opening game of district and the aerial
assault of the Jim Ned Indians on October 10th at Jim Ned. The Eagles rolled up
318 yards of offense against the Bearcats, but three lost fumbles kept the game
close..
