NOTICE: NEW RABIES LAW
Texas State Law has changed its requirements on rabies vaccination. It
now allows dogs and cats to be vaccinated at three-year intervals, rather
than every year.
What should we do? With Fannin County reporting five cases of rabies in
2002, we are hardly immune in this neighborhood. Are some dogs at higher
risk? Who runs the countryside? These guys should be vaccinated every
year regardless of the ‘law.’ Remember we are not only protecting our pets,
we are protecting the people they come in contact with (us and our kids!).
Housedogs and cats that rarely come in contact with wildlife may skip a
year or two on their vaccination schedule and not risk exposing anyone.
BUT if they get loose or come home with a bite, they will need a booster
vaccination as soon as possible.
Everyone should tailor their vaccinating with the recommendation of a
Licensed Veterinarian who knows your pet.
At Gray Veterinary Services, LLC, we are currently recommending out-
door dogs get vaccinated early. This may be in combination with a yearly
exam and testing for parasites such as heartworms, intestinal worms and
fleas or ticks. Since our pets age seven years to our one, we are also recom-
mending blood tests for metabolic problems such as kidney or liver disease
or even diabetes. If we test our pets before they get old on us, we can pre-
vent sicknesses or slow their progress before it is too late.
Here is a recommended protocol:
Puppies: Monthly high quality boosters until four months of age, plus de-
worming.
Four Months: Last Booster and Rabies vaccination
Six Months: Don’t forget to Spay or Neuter!
1 One year later: Booster and Rabies Vaccination, consultation on para-
sites, disease prevention
Two years: Exam, heartworm test, fecal test and nutritional consult
Three years: Booster and Rabies Vaccination (Dog is now 21)
Four years: First dental, first blood test, Checking thyroid, blood count
and for blood parasites
Five years: Complete chemistry checking for kidney and liver health as
well as for diabetes (Dog is now 35)
Six years: Repeat ages 3-5 changing each year according to individual
pets needs.
