Opal Faye Perkins celebrates 90
On Saturday, Feb. 28, Opal Faye Perkins was honored with a
birthday party in the Club House at the Buckner Baptist Retirement
Village in Dallas to celebrate her 90 birthday. There were 81 family
• members and friends who enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of food,
fellowship, reminiscing and picture taking. Perkins was born in
Commerce on March 3, 1914, to Lonnie and Florence Stewart
Coats. Perkins and her husband, Ray, lived in the Hickory Creek College THEA test offered at PJC

Pictured is the U.S.S. Missouri, the battleship on which Japanese officers and government officials
participated in surrender ceremonies on Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay, putting an end to all World
• War TT fighting. U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur, U.S. Navy Admiral William F. Halsley and
U.S. Army Lieutenant General J.M. Wainwright were all present during the ceremony to witness the
signing of the surrender documents aboard the ship. Leonard resident Joe Cherry, a member of the
U.S. Navy at the time, was on board the ship. It has been reported that over 400,000 American lives
were lost during World War II.

Damon Eastwood
graduates from
Army training
Army Pvt. Damon K. Eastwood has
graduated from One Station Unit Training
a (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School,
Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The train-
ing consisted of basic military training
and advanced individual training (AIT).
He is the son of Robert East-
wood and grandson of Elbert Nowell,
both of Leonard, and is a 2003
graduate of Leonard High School.
During basic training, the trainee
received instruction in drill and ceremo-
nies, military customs and courtesies,
map reading, tactics, basic rifle marks-
manship, physical fitness, field training,
and first aid. The recruit developed
• combat skills and handled various weap-
ons available to the infantry soldier.
During AIT, the soldier received
instruction to serve as an infantryman us-
ing light and heavy anti-armor weapons,
indirect-fire support, and mechanized
operations while assigned to a rifle or
mortar squad. The training included
weapons qualification, tactics, patrol-
ling, navigation, field communications,
and combat operations; engagement in
infantry combat exercises, battle drills,
land mine locating, neutralizing and ex-
tracting, and survival operations during
a nuclear, biological or chemical attack..
