wife and young son to Leonard from
Greenville,” Gumphrey said.
The brick structure Gumphrey
has planned will also sport a small
playground in front. He plans on
opening the restaurant, "hopefully
around May 1.”
Community response has been
equally enthusiastic. While rumor
has had Sonic coming to Leonard
for nearly three years, the thought
of the restaurant becoming a reality
has some already salivating.
“I can’t wait to get my hands on
a grape slush,” one Leonard resident
said. “1 can taste it already."

“As a non-profit organization, we
are supported by the communities we
serve,” stated Hutchins. “Churches,
county-wide, are the main source
of revenue for the Ministries. We
welcome their participation, as
well as that of individuals and
businesses. We have been blessed
to have such generous support from
the community at large. Through
continued donations, we will be
able to improve our service to the
people of Fannin County.”

the task of moving all the water

Henderson also reported that
now that the permit has been paid
for, work on a Sonic Drive-In on
U.S. Highway 69 would begirt
as soon as weather permits. (See
related story.)
Sonic is not the only business
eyeballing Leonard, however.
Henderson told the council that
another person from Shreveport
had been in touch regarding a
possible retail store near the
Sonic site. Henderson said as-yet-
identified store would be around
9,100 square feet.
Old red brick
needs attention
Henderson also brought a
troubling matter to the council’s
attention regarding the brick streets
that surround the square. The brick
was laid by local workers in the
1920s, and is considered by many
to be part of what makes Leonard,
Leonard.

struggles to keep up.
"We're beginning to lose the
brick road bad, especially over
by Nolens (Floor Covering),”
Henderson said. The original road •
was built with a dirt layer, then |
sand, then a concrete slab and |
brick. The dirt has eroded over .1
time,, and the sand and concrete a
have dropped.,
"If we’re going to keep the »
brick streets, we’re going to have =
to do something,” Henderson said,
adding that he is now looking
into grant money to help fund a
renovation. “The longer you leave
it, the worse it gets,” he said. “The
street is cracking.”
The council also approved for
a second reading two separate
agenda items that would make
the 100 block of Poplar Street one
way from north to south, and also a
no-parking zone. The narrow street
will not even allow two cars to
pass side by side, Henderson said.
The proposed changes will be read
three times before being finally
approved by the council.
The city will also remark the
handicapped parking by the SNAP
center, and add more handicapped
parking near the Furniture Gallery.
That new parking space will also
likely have a ramp up to the
sidewalk.
