stage Thursday, March 3 during the
PTL Talent Show. Dozens of acts

the chairs.
A panel of judges had the dif-

but made sure everyone took home
a participation ribbon. The trophy
for Most Talented went to Sarah and

Most people can reflect back on their childhood
years and remember scrutinizing themselves in the mir-
ror. Getting the hair just right could take quite a while,
and it was a big part of feeling confident as a kid.

struck by disease, approve of the way their hair looks when
they see their reflection. More than a dozen people have gone

Stylist Mechelle Murphy completes Mikayla Price’s
new look, after she donated 10 inches of hair.
to Hair Central in downtown Leonard to donate their long
tresses to Locks of Love, a nonprofit agency that provides
hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children. Many
of these children have permanent hair loss due to a rare
disease called alopecia areata, or due to chemotherapy.
“We are out there to make a difference in the world
for people,” Hair Central sylist Stephanie Murphy
said. “There are so many children who are teased and
made fun of and this makes a difference for them.”
When disease causes complete baldness, it can be
devastating. The results are particularly traumatic for
children. But the cost of a realistic, real-hair prosthesis
is staggering ... $3,500 to $6,000. Most families cannot
afford one. It’s a big enough reason for the kind-hearted
to let down their hair to a pair of scissors. High-school-
aged Mikayla Price of Leonard wanted to help others,
she said. “I’d thought about donating to Locks of Love
because my cousin had done it, and because my aunt had
recently lost her hair due to chemotherapy,” she said. “I
was nervous about having 10 inches taken off, but was
very pleased with how it was cut.... I’m glad now that
I got to do this. It is a great way to help other people.”
