three and a half kilometers from the. entrance to Santa Theresa Count.
Club, just west of the Rio Grande River in Dona Ana County, New Mexico
Presently it lies in the sand foothills just above the flood plain of
the river. Large intrusive sand dunes have covered much of the aboriginal
living area to a depth of two to three meters. Present draining is gen-
erally from south to north. Possible pit house occupations are suggested
by burned or soil discoloration are, e u- & these w
tested.
One room block compose othree possible structure was oriented
east-west with suggested entrances facing south due to the placement of
fire hearths near the center of the south wall,
The east room of this block was excavated as was a one meter wide
trench adjacent to the room's east wall. A pit was dug until the floor
was located then the floor followed until walls were encountered. It
was impossible to remove the top adobe fill with a trowel or shovel which
necessitated the use of a pick. This adobe was layered as if one layer
was placed on the top of another when still wet. It averaged 10cm thick.
The entire area of the room contained this compacted layered adobe as did
the trenhr along ,e east all.of items traded into the site.
