We all returned to Sundown and the author't6 Lubbock. The following day
all bones were washed and cleaned, which revealed the full fragile and
deteriorated condition of the burial. Several hours were consumed in the
reconstruction of the skull and mandible.
Conclusion:
A. The Indians of West Texas and central Eastern New Mexico
utilized the acorns from the shinnery belt as a part of
their fall and winter diet. The shinnery belt extends
northward from Monahans into southeastern New Mexico and
as far north to northeast of Littlefield. (Smith, 1966)
This indi.v.dual could have been a member of a hunting and
gathering band. Judging from teeth wear, the age would
probably fall in the late thirties or early forties. The
cause of death was undetermined.
B. The absence of vertebrae and other bone parts of the
skeleton was probably due to deterioration because of
their location in the grave pit. The cup-shaped pit acted
as a moisture catching basin from natural precipitation.
Other factors contributing to the condition of the grave
and its contents were tractor weight and plow action in
the course of normal cultivation. Sex of this individual
was not determined positively.
