Keep bones strong with foods rich in calcium
Since many people don’t know
how much calcium their bodies
need to be healthy and don’t
know what foods are rich in cal-
cium, I am going to educate you
in this matter.
Did you know that bone loss
and fractures are epidemic in
people over 65? But did you
also know you could prevent
that from happening to you by
changing a few simple things in
your life.
Breaking a hip is one of the
leading reasons people end up in
nursing homes. One out of six
women will fracture a hip dur-
ing their lifetime. That’s as high
as the risk of breast, uterine and
ovarian cancer combined.
And a man aged 50 or older is
more likely to break his hip dur-
ing his lifetime than to get
prostate cancer.
Osteoporosis has increased
over the last 10 years and it is
not just because the population
is aging. Says Marian T. Hannan
of Harvard Medical School. “It
is because people are not exer-
cising enough with weight-bear-
ing type exercises, first and sec-
ond, we are not getting enough
calcium.”
Up to a quarter of the people in
nursing homes are in there be-
cause of a hip fracture. This is
an incredibly expensive and life-
altering event.
Young children are at risk of
not having their bones form cor-
rectly and strong if they are not
getting enough natural calcium.
Young teens, especially girls,

are at great risk of developing
osteoporosis in menopause if
they do not take care of their
bones now. Girls and guys from
as young as 11 to 25 are not in-
cluding calcium rich foods in
their diets because they believe
these foods are too fattening.
I include the guys now in my
assessment of extreme dieters
because just as many guys as
girls now have a body image
