Peters Colony recognizes good citizens
By JEFFREY BALL
Managing Editor
Outstanding citizens of Peters
Colony Elementary were recog-
nized recently as the filth six
week grading period ended with
the "Good Citizen Lunch."
The program, which oilers
special recognition to students
demonstrating outstanding
citizenship, is now ending its
second year.
The lunch is held at the close of
each six weeks grading period as
the culmination of an on-going
program of honoring good
citizens.
Assistand Principal Jan Quisen-
berry explained that Peters Col-
ony has “always done a good
citizen award." The present
program is a result of evolution —
from one student every six
weeks to a boy and a girl from
each grade selected on a progres-
sive weekly basis.
It is not an academic award,
notes Quisenberry, who will
assume the responsiblities of
principal effective with the Fall,
1989 school term.
“Many times there are stu-
dents that are not high academic
achievers, but they’re good kids.
There’s not a space on the report
card for this,” said Quisenberry.
The selection is made on three
levels. First, the students are
nominated by the teachers. Then
a selection is made by the student
council, based on the nomination,
without knowing the name of the
student. Final approval is by Prin-
cipal David Spence.
Students selected are
announced as part of the morning
televised announcement prog-
ram. Each student wears a spe-
cail button for a week.
“The whole program reflects
the vision that we have for the
school — for kids to learn and be
successful,” said Quisenberry.
The spirit of the program is
summed up by a single hand sign
one can observe being exchanged
between teachers and student
and between student and student
at the school.
“We have a motto that we tell
the kids. It is very simple. ‘Do
what’s right.’ Often (we) will just
hold up three fingers and it serves
as a visible reminder. The kinder-
garters understand — and it is
catchy enough that the fifth grad-
ers don’t mind,” said Quisenbery.
“Anything that epitomizes
citizenship is summed up in those
three words,” Quisenberry adds.
Good citizens for the fifth six
weeks period were: Jessica
Cash, O’Bryant Cruz, Chanze
Witcher, Richard Hill, Allison
Thompson, Oscar Ruiz, Taylor
Pilgrim, Craig Focht, Stacey
Lawrence, James Moore,
Stephanie Newberry and Steve
Vondersaar.

Griffin band takes honors in fest
The Griffin Middle School Concert Band received
straight first divisions and the “Outstanding Band of the
Day” trophy in competition against 40 middle school
and junior high concert and symphonic bands in the
Sandy Lake Fun Fest, April 22.
The band, under the direction of John Benzer, was
noted as an “outstanding ensemble playing with fine
musical skills and development.”
“Receiving the outstanding band of the day was a big
achievement for the Griffin Concert Band, especially
since the last time that the band received this honor
was when Kathy Johnson, now head band director at
Griffin, was the assistant band director under Dick
Clardy, in 1983,” said Benzer.
