conference
Suzi Alberson, Sandi Gehrke and
Sandy Simpson of Griffin Middle
School were among several hundred
PTA leaders from across the state
who attended the Texas PTA 1990
Leadership Seminar July 14-16 in
Austin.
Noted educator Dr. Mary Tyler,
associate professor of special educa-
tion at East Texas University in
Texarkana, spoke at the general
session held at LBJ Auditorium on
July 14.
Some 99 workshops and the PTA
Leadership Course were held on the
University of Texas campus at Jes-
ter Center and the University
Teaching Center PTA Council presi-
dents from throughout the state had
an eight-hour seminar on Sunday,
July 15.
Texas PTA President Mary Short
of Richardson presided at the gener-
al session on Saturday night and pre-
sented several workshops. Sessions
on PTA organizational and oper-
ational functions, such as program
planning, bylaws, membership, leg-
islation, parliamentary procedure, fi-
nances, volunteer programs, and
school and community relations
were held.
Delegates also attended work-
shops on health and safety, cults,
youth sports, self-esteem, parent-
ing, teen years, dropout prevention,
inclusivity, character and spiritual
education and resources.
