Bulldogs beginning to gel, Billies promise to be ready
By James Stewart
After a si uggish start before
a hometown holiday weekend
crowd last Friday night, the
Brady Bulldog varsity squad
gained the momentum it
needed to put the first mark in
the win column as they slowly
dismantled the Grape Creek
Eagles, 36-8.
With starting quarterback
Chaney McBee sidelined for
the game, Logan Owens was
again at the helm looking
to prove that his experience
gained from the first outing
would shine through.
The teams traded blows for
the first quarter and it wasn’t
until the first minute of the
second quarter that the Brady
offense began toclick. Starting
on their own 18, the Bulldogs
looked as ifthey were going to
stall once again and were stuck
in a fourth and short situation,
but an offsides penalty gave the
drive new life.
The team made good on
the second effort and marched
down the field chewing up
yardage in big chunks coming
on a pass from Owens to Travis
Sammons as well as several
long runs by Zeph Valdez and
Chris Neal.

Improvement
is underway for
the Bulldogs
I have heard for many, many
years that the most improve-
ment a football team will make
is between the first and second
games. I will have to say that we
did make some big strides last
week as your Brady Bulldogs
dismantled the Grape Creek
Eagles, 36-8 Friday night.
It was once again a slow start
as we had several starters stand-
ing on the sidelines through the
first quarter for various reasons.
But once we got on track, we
out-scored the Eagles 28-0 in
the final 2% quarters to seal our
first victory in 2010.
So far I have been so im-
pressed with this group taking
on new things. We put in a cou-
ple of new wrinkles for Grape
Creek and our kids executed
them perfectly. We also added
a new play at the half and that
play got us a huge first down in
the second half. Kids picking
up on a halftime adjustment
is so important to a football
team and this bunch has been
very good at it in our first two
games. The facts are we have
out scored our opponents 42-15
in the second half and that is a
credit to our kids.
Many might not understand
this at all, but 1 have always
enjoyed out of town games.
We go on the road for the first
time this Friday as we head to
Gillespie County to take on the
Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies.
1 guess I enjoy out of town
games for many reasons. First
of all, I presume that I am
somewhat of a control freak—1
think most head coaches are. I
like to have my little chickadees
in the nest and we have our
chickadees with us from about
2 p.m. on Friday. They are ours
and I know where they all are
and what they are doing.
Also, I really do like the
underdog role and as far as I’m
concerned, we are ALWAYS
underdogs on the road. It’s
always “circle the wagons”
time when we are on the road
and I like that role.
This week we are playing a
Class 3A school with a ton of
football tradition. The Billies
are struggling a bit this year, but
that have also played two ex-
tremely strong Class 3 A and 4A
football teams. This is also their
first home game and they will
be ready to play, but our kids
like playing bigger schools. It
will be a very competitive game
and we’re looking forward
to the challenge. Kickoff in
Fredericksburg is at 7:30. See
you at the game.
The Bulldogs overcame a
few penalties and ended up
punching it in from 20 yards
out when Valdez broke free
around the left side for the first
score on the night. Isaiah Con-
rad tacked on the two-point
conversion and the Bulldogs
led 8-0.
The Eagles took the ensu-
ing kickoff and proceeded to
return the favor eating 4:15
off the clock before running
back Eli Untermeyer slipped
through the Brady defense for
a 26-yard TD to even the score
with a successful two-point
conversion.
Brady looked to answer
the Eagles in grand fashion
when only five plays into the
drive, Owens carried the ball
for a 41-yard touchdown that
was called back on a holding
penalty.
But Owens and the offense
were beginning to get their
assignments and after facing
second and 18 at the Eagle 48,
Sammons and Andrew Brooks
teamed up to move it down
the field. After going for it on
fourth down, a pass from Ow-
ens to Kyle Andrews moved
the ball down to the Eagle 13
and set up another touchdown
that came on a 13-yard run by
Sammons.
Brooks tacked on the two-
point conversion and with 2:33
left in the first half, Brady led
16-8. That score held going
into the locker rooms after
trading fumbles in the next two
series and time expired in the
first half with Brady on top by
a touchdown.
With time of possession
in the first half split almost
evenly, the Bulldogs emerged
from the halftime break with
a new attitude. They needed
. only eight plays to add another
touchdown to the scoreboard.
Owens rattled off two succes-
sive first down runs which were
followed by runs by Brooks
and Jacob Hodges. Conrad
moved the ball from the 36 to
the 13 and on first and 10, a pass
from Owens to Brooks scored
again. The PAT attempt failed,
but Brady led, 22-8, with only
2:38 gone off the clock in the
third quarter.
The Eagles moved inside
the Bulldog 20 on their next
drive, but turned it over on
downs when they failed to
convert a 4th and 17 from the
18 with 3:39 left in the third
quarter.
The Bulldog offense found
its stride once again. Runs
by Brooks set up a 33-yard
scamper by Conrad down to
the Eagle six. Hodges carried
in the score on the next play
and Owens tacked on the two
point conversion and the 30-8
lead had the Eagles grasping
at straws as they attempted to
get something moving, but a
fumble on their second play
was recovered by Brady and
the Bulldogs took over at the
Grape Creek 35.
Penalties shot the Bulldogs
in the foot on this drive, but
they still managed to move
into scoring position when on
4th and 7, a pass from Owens
to Valdez moved the ball to
the five where Owens scored
on the next play.
After a third quarter that
lasted what seemed like as
long as the entire first half.
nmot!
and we will get their best.
"Our kids have really liked
playing a team in a higher
classification. Fredericksburg
has some tremendous football
tradition in the past. They are a
hungry football team and those
will make any coach and team
nervous."

This week, the Bulldogs
travel to Fredericksburg for
a 7:30 p.m. start to battle the
Billies, who have struggled the
first two weeks of the season,
losing by big numbers to Ker-
rville Tivy and Burnet.
"I have told our kids that we
have to be very careful about
reading other teams’ scores,"
said Jones. "Just looking at the
scores from Frederickburg’s
first two games will get us in
trouble. The teams they lost to
are very competitive 4A and
3A schools. This will be Fred-
ericksburg’s first home game
and they will be ready for us
