Pres. Running
into Trouble on
Boost for Tax
WASHINGTON — President
Johson is running into trouble
on his proposal for a tax boost to
help fight the Vietnam War. In
his State of the Union Message to
Congress, he has urged a six per
cent tax hike. But congressional
reaction is generally cool. Many
in Congress are saying domestic
spending should be cut back in-
stead.
As for the Vietam War, John-
son’s call for continued slow
pressure and patience in press-
ing the war brought mixed reac-
tions on Capitol Hill. Some
thought we should step up the
war. Others thought there should
be a scaling down of fighting
and more efforts toward nego-
tiations. But Johnson advised
that we forgo what he calls the
inviting but dangerous tempta-
tion to get it over with. However, And on the Democratic side
his formula left neither the dov-( there also was a lack of enthu-
es nor hawks happy.
The President apparently
would like to see his proposed
tax boost go into effect next
July first. Some lower income
brackets would be exempt. But
generally you’d get tapped for
six cents more for each dollar
you now pay in income taxes.
Both individuals and corpora-
tions would have to pay this tax
surcharge which would last as
long as war cost continue to rise.
Republican leaders were quick
to attack Johnson’s proposal.
siasm for the tax-hike idea.
Senate Republican Leader
Everett Dirksen says Congress
will see whether there can be
economies in Johnson’s budget
before agreeing to any tax hike.
And House GOP Leader Gerald
Ford said Johnson hasn’t made
a case for a tax increase.
On other domestic matters,
Johnson is proposing a 20 per
cent hike in social security pay-
ments. This would come just
three months before the next
Presidential Election.
In a surprise move, Johnson
is proposing merger of the Com-
merce and Labor Departments
into a Department of Business
and Labor. Immediate reaction
to this was unfavorable.
Among other things, he urges
a revision of the military draft
laws to eliminate inequalities. He
also calls for extending Medicare
to the pernamently and totally
disabled. And he calls for outlaw-
ing wiretapping except where na-
tional Security is threatened.

Loves to Batter
Hapless Linemen
MIAMI, Florida—Miami Dol-
phins Fullback Cookie Gilchrist,
late of the Denver Broncos, is a
man who enjoys plunging into
hapless linemen of the opposing
teams. He performs these chores
for the Dolphins with relish.
These duties are not without
their rewards, however, and
Cookie relishes the fruits of his
labors as much as the labors
themselves.
Among his favorite rewards is
a brand new car, provided by the
football club each year. His cur-
rent model has almost all the
creature comforts a man could
want. According to the Dolphin’s
business manager. Chuck Burr,
Gilchrist ordered everything for
the car but the kitchen sink.
The salesman who sold the
1967 model automobile said
among the options Gilchrist had
installed were: a seat warmer.
twilight signal that switches on
the headlight when it gets dark,
push-buton trunk lid, rear win-
dow defroster, four-speaker
stereo radio, six way adjustable
seats, a device that automatically
dims the lights for oncoming
cars, an adjustable steering
wheel, rear vents, tinted glass
and cruise control for consis-
tent highway speed—among oth-
er things.
Now, after a hard day slaving
over a hot gridiron, Cookie can
relax while traveling home . . .
in undisputed comfort.
